Help! Aviation Vision DQ after Service Selection

Looks like most of the news is out already. So just wanted to add in some things here. For transparency, I am not a pilot but have had 4 Mids in my time fail flight physicals for various reasons. If for eye issues and they meet other URL requirements, then they can simply select one of the other communities.

As for getting a flight physical or eye exam out in private practice, if it makes someone feel better, then go ahead. But Navy recognizes military flight physicals only. And many students pass at their NROTC unit but then fail at Pensacola.

I tell my folks if aviation was their first choice, then they need to make really really sure they made good 2nd and 3rd choices.

And while I am beating my own drum advocating for SWO, we do offer that nice little bonus when they reach LT of 105K, which tends to be when people are thinking of starting a family or buying a house.

Just food for thought.MLooks like most of the news is out already. So just wanted to add in some things here. Thank you so much. It is reassuring to hear that there is a process for handling this little misadventure. DS was worried that they would just drop him. His dream always has been to be a naval officer-less so than a specific community. Things much calmer today. His esophoria is such that it isn’t safe for him to be a pilot. I’m excited to see where he lands and told him to think through the options carefully so that he is ready when the flight surgeon finishes the DQ paperwork.

I see I'm a little late to this thread but I'm an SNA that was DQ'd and redesignated as a SNFO for esotropia. The only flight physical that matters is the one you do at NAMI once you get down to Pensacola. Only NAMI can disqualify him from aviation duty and unless his esophoria is severe, he should be fine.

A quick question-did you commission out of OCS? If you commissioned out of NROTC or USNA, was SNFO your next choice? Trying to figure out how they reassign.

Quick question-for your mids that were medically DQ’d from pilot, did they get bumped down to their next service selection choice? Our mid was told that the Flight Surgeon needs to process the DQ and then it all gets sent back to his unit for them to “figure out what to do with him”. We are wondering what that means for his assignment. Thank you

It sounds as though the Flight Surgeon may not be Navy but that's just a guess. Regardless, once the medical paperwork gets processed, it will be loaded into a system called "webwave". If the condition is such that the DQ is comprehensive (can't be an NFO, SNAO, etc), then most likely your Mid moves to the next choice which is available to him/her.

What is really best is for your Mid to discuss with the NROTC advisor as well as the PNS. They will likely reach back to Naval Service Training Command who has a medical representative to see what is in the realm of the possible. My mids dq'd based on "anthros" (short for anthropometrics) and one shifted over to nuke, one EOD, and two went SWO.

Super-that helps. I think he wants SWO as he was debating on that and Aviation to begin with. Just hope he gets a shot at ship selection. I told him to talk to his command. But, he has to get the pilot DQ first. Everything the examiner said, as well as the published vision reqs, would indicate it is unwaiverable. Will just have to wait for the process. Of course, DS is eager to go to work. Which, is a good thing, because no matter what, he will have a lot of it. Take care and thank you.

Update here. DS reassigned to SWO. In dark as far as ship selection. He knows what he wants, not sure of process. I hope he gets tossed in with the February NROTC selections-because of his rank. Told him to ask his PNS. Two lessons-get a qualified eye exam (take the official requirements readily available on the internet for evaluation ) before listing aviation pilot and for prospective mids in the scholarship process, be sure you can be happy SWO or SUB.

His PNS should be able to help, but PM me if it doesn't seem to be working. Usually the detailers ask what is most important.....location, ship type, or job. Most young men want a certain location, which is easier to swing than a specific ship type. His SWO advisor can also help guide him along.

Is it out of order for him to email the detailer?

Hmmmmm, out of order......not exactly. But the detailer may reply with...."what did your PNS and advisor recommend?" Or the head detailer may send to the PNS and ask....are you helping with this? Sometimes you can call the detailer's number and have a quick conversation.

DS put in for San Diego and got it. Not so sure about the ship but he wanted San Diego so all’s well that ends well. Let the adventures begin.

San Diego sounds great - from my cold midwestern town 😉.

If he wants to learn about the Naval Station there or general questions about the West coast, there is a website called sailorbob.com. lots and lots of surface warfare folks and many of them are Ensigns or LTJG's. He has a ways to go before any hard choices need to be made, but one of the early choices is where to live.
