Good Afternoon,

Yesterday, I was offered an AOG Sponsored Prep Scholarship. I have briefly researched the schools that were offered (Georgia Military College, Marion Military Institute, New Mexico Military Institute, and Hargrave Military Academy) but have also seen on the forums that some people have endured really bad experiences at some of these schools; experiences that contradict the information and reviews offered on some of these schools' websites.

I would really appreciate some insight on which of these institutions are the best for one to develop their leadership and academic skills prior to going to USMA next year.

Thank you very much!

I am currently a self prep (not for West Point) at MMI and I really enjoy it!! The AOG’s here definitely have a little family. You could reach out to Lieutenant Colonel Bowen and ask if there’s a current AOG here that he can put you in contact with. If you have any questions let me know! I also have a forum posted about MMI if you want to look at that too!

I'll preface this by saying that I'm not an expert in the field. That said, I have been in contact with LTC Bowen at MMI (in the event that my son might end up there next year) and, so far, I have been thoroughly impressed by him. Bonus for USMA candidates is that he is a USMA grad. He seems particularly dialed in to WP.

Congratulations on the offer.

Have heard from a reliable source (a student's dad) really good things about MMI.

If you are able to, I recommend touring the schools so you can see them in action.

My son is a self-prep at MMI.
I absolutely 110% recommend MMI and Colonel Bowen's leadership. The respondent who stated that the WP group are a tight knit group was 100% correct. You would be starting out at WP with a very close group of friends from MMI in just over a year. And you WILL be far more prepared for WP than just about any kid who is direct out of HS! My son has thoroughly enjoyed his year at MMI! Colonel Bowen and the school as a whole, has delivered everything they promised, and MORE.

My daughter was a self prep at NWP in 2017, graduated from West Point last year! It was a great experience for her. I think a lot of AOG scholarship recipients go to MMI and are very happy with thier choice. NWP has a great program that is only 4 months and then you go to a local college for spring semester. She really loved her time home and felt NWP definitely helped her prepare for USMA.

Congratulations! We’ve been very happy with the AOG experience at GMC. I’ve posted about it elsewhere along with some of the other parents of current AOG scholars. GMC was closest geographically, which has been great for visiting over breaks. We’ve also appreciated having the leadership and influence of General Caldwell (President of GMC, USMA grad and 3-star General). Milledgeville is a small college-town, with enough to do (from my understanding that is not the case at MMI). All of the AOG scholars there have received their appointments. When our son visitors West Point, the cadet he was placed with had attended MMI and told him not to go to that one, so I’m sure that made an impact, too. The relationships with the other scholars has been the best benefit along with an additional year of growth.
