Helpful Tips for Newly Appointed WP Families

Don't get hurt! Yes, serious undisclosed, recent injuries and/or corrective surgeries will get you bounced on R day. Stay in great shape - will make the summer go by easier. Break in all footwear, especially the boots. Try to work up to 5-10 mile 30-40 lb rucks. Get out and jog regularly. Keep doing pushups and pull ups to your CFA scores if you can. Watch the partying and no tattoos. Spend quality time with family and siblings. Learn how to go without your cell phone for 6 weeks (Beast). Portals will open on 1 April for uploading up all paperwork except fingerprints. Good luck!
Do you get some sort of medical exam or form you have to fill out on R-Day? And if something happens to you and you report it to your admissions officer, would you be relieved of your appointment (I don't have an injury, my parents are just big on preventing one)?

You are given a serious once-over by medical staff that hang around and manage the height, weight, and blood draw. That is when you are checked for tattoos and any possible injuries and scars from recent surgical corrections made since the Dodmerb medical exam. If you do get injured, reach out to your FF Rep and RC immediately and be honest. WP will make a determination if it is something that is waiverable and still let you come on R Day. If not this cycle, then they will probably give you an LOA for the next class, tell you to go to college for a year, and then reapply. I have had to deal with 2 recent late cycle injuries with candidates in my district. One - a hockey player broke his arm in Feb. He got an LOA, went to college (summer, fall and spring terms), reapplied, and received one of the first offers this year. Another one from 2 years ago - broke his wrist skiing in March after receiving his offer. WP pulled his offer and made it conditional on healing and getting a waiver. Got the waiver, but offer was still conditional on passing a brief medical review first thing on R Day. They made him do 40 push ups and he did more pull ups than his CFA score. So he waltzed right in and had a great summer. Parents were a wreck - they drove the whole way to WP not knowing if their son would stay or come home with them on R Day.

If you get injured the answer is: It Depends. Depending on the type of injury and the duration of healing time and the ability to assess what happened. So, best to be very safe.

My neighbor's son tore his ACL wrestling after he had received an appointment. He never got back in--for whatever reason. Either he did not understand the process of reapply or he fell in love with the local university and did not want to start over at USMA.

I have cadets in back-to-back years. My advice is pretty simple.
1. Cadets should follow official instruction from the Academy.
2. Things change, even without COVID, but especially now.
3. Do not disregard specific instruction based on something you saw here, on social media, or heard from an old grad.
4. Just as a poster stated earlier, my cadets had very different Beast experiences. They continue to note differences each year based on company leadership, TAC officers, different instructors, and the cadet’s personality/perception/stress management/course load, etc.
5. Your local West Point parents club, this forum, class pages, and the moms and dads pages are great resources, but do not share personal info on any cadet. PERIOD.
