Herndon 2010

An Alternative Herndon Proposal

I seem to remember reading about the history of Herndon climb once and noting that, in the initial years of this tradition, the monument was not greased. Greasing started in later years. (Maybe someone can research when it actually started). If they want to use Sea Trials to end Plebe Year, might I suggest that, at the beginning of Sea Trials, a "Dixie cup" is placed on top of the monument, and at the end of Sea Trials the Plebes are "released" to climb and replace the hat on an ungreased Herndon monument, marking the end of Plebe year and upholding tradition in it's purest sense. I'm sure there would be far fewer injuries without the grease as well.

Found this:

"The first evidence that the shaft of the gray, granite, obelisk-shaped monument was greased to make the climb more difficult appears in the Lucky Bag yearbook of the class of 1952. Their climb took place following the graduation ceremony held on June 3, 1949. Grease was not used again until 1953, when a fairly heavy coat was applied."

Above the answer to the Herndon question however, you may wish to consult Brief Points for a more detailed answer but the above youtube spot features what I guess is a tour guide who is very entertaining in explaining a little about Herndon.

Getting rid of Herndon!!?? BAD IDEA!! Is nothing sacred??
