Hello - I had an inguinal hernia when I was in 8th grade and got laparoscopic surgery on it. I have 3 little scars on my lower stomach. One that you can kind of see, and 2 more that you can barely see at all (you literally can’t see it). I am perfectly fine now with no health problems. If I report that I had a hernia are they going to disqualify me and ask for my full medical history?

Hi! I have knowledge of a someone in ROTC who was cleared for the same issue. Every case is different, so of course this doesn’t mean it’s an automatic for others, just this person’s experience…. for what it’s worth. His surgery was when he was an infant vs 8th grade … not sure if that matters. Ahead of time, like so many suggest, maybe think about getting your records ahead of time just in case they ask for AMI. Good luck 🍀!

You review questions on medical history carefully, reading for full comprehension. You answer accurately, honestly and with the information requested. Then you follow the process after that, whatever it may be. Every case is evaluated on its merits.

Go to the DoDMERB home page and read every item in the left-side menu, including Contacts. No login required to do this. Educate yourself at the primary source.

They ask things like "Have you ever had surgery?", so you would need to answer yes to that. They will ask for supporting documents specific to that surgery and possibly DQ you and then it will go for a waiver. I was told to not offer information that isn't asked for but answer direct questions honestly. You should never lie on these forms.

I agree with this - I should have added info similar to this in my original post…. and, they will look for scars - everywhere. I won’t go into detail but they look at everything. My DS has some bad scratch scars on his arm from a disgruntled basketball opponent. He had to submit additional info related to how those scars were received….
