Hold Candidate

@Bennyhana - Here are multiple years of data: https://www.usmma.edu/class-profile

For the prior class:
1758 opened an application
of those - only 809 actually completed the application process
of those - only 593 were deemed "qualified" -- I would put them in the HOLD category
of those - 428 received offers of appointment

As I read it - for those in a Qualified or HOLD status, 72% received an appointment last year. If you were in a group of 10 stellar kids -- could you beat 3 in a competition? I like those odds.
Crazy to think ~70% of qualified applicants get accepted each year.

I thought it says somewhere on the website that it’s 22 out of 100 that get accepted.

@Drenns3 and @twoducks it is all in how you look at the published class profiles. Are you comparing appointed to applications opened? That doesn't seem fair. Comparing appointed to completed applications? That figure was ~50%.

If we said appointed vs people who opened an application - 428/1758 ............drumroll..........................24 out of 100. For the serious applicant who completes the application - this stat is meaningless. It includes people who never had a chance because they did not even complete the application. They saw how hard it was and bailed. Is it fair to say that by actually completing your application, you doubled your chance of admission? That is what the stats say. Does it mean that if you do not complete the application you have a 24% chance of getting accepted? No. Does it mean you have a 50% chance of getting accepted simply for filling out the paperwork? Kinda.

I too previously claimed 10% are appointed! It certainly sounds better and more exclusive, but it depends on who you are comparing yourself to. In reality, when you actually look at the breakdown, odds of admission for a candidate who COMPLETES THE APPLICATION and is legitimately QUALIFIED are far better than that.

Example - USNA class of 2024 (https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/_files/documents/ClassPortrait.pdf)
15699 opened an application and of those 1426 were offered Appointments (about 10%.... but that isnt the whole story and they intentionally leave out the more granular details of the applicant pool)

Example - USAFA class of 2019 (https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/Grad_Class_Profile_2019.pdf)
9122 opened an application
of those 7156 completed enough to be considered a candidate
of those only 2528 were deemed actually qualified
of those 1559 were offered appointments (61%)

Example - USMA class of 2024 (https://www.westpoint.edu/admissions/class-profile)
12294 opened an application
of those only 2228 were deemed actually qualified
of those 1210 entered in the class (note - they say the actual entering size and not the number appointed which was higher) = 54%

I just got an email this morning saying that I was put on Hold. Does that mean I will not receive my admission decision before April 1st?

it just means you are fully qualified but they don’t know how appointments will play out

I think that people who are not deemed qualified (ex no nom, bad grades, etc.) should count in the total number of applicants since the people who were appointed did something in order to meet those achievements. And, depending on what type of applicant you are, the rate goes down when you subtract people who are guaranteed appointments. The acceptance rate is lower when you subtract the number of preppies and Falcon Foundation scholars, which I would do since they are basically guaranteed an appointment, so you are not competing directly against them. Then again, leaving them in could help balance out the number that receive those opportunities this year. Just my two cents

My son was placed on the national hold list a couple weeks ago. His understanding is that he is waiting on for either a Missouri applicant to decline, or till April 1st and maybe get a National spot. How long do applicants have to decline or accept? According to one source, none of the 3 applicants from our state have accepted yet.

I believe May 1st

Does being put on hold means that USMMA used all the available slots in your state, therefore putting you on the NWL. Or they don't find you strong enough for a slot in your state, therefore putting you on the NWL.
