Homeschool Applicant Class of 2025 Question

I realize this question may be getting into the weeds, but as a homeschool parent, I do not want to put our son at a disadvantage because of a poor curriculum choice. He attends a hybrid school for his humanity classes, but takes math and science elsewhere as they do not offer AP courses. He is currently taking Honors Biology from The Potter School. As a rising 10th grader he can take AP Biology, (if they give him an age waiver) or Honors Chemistry. Is there a general consensus as to the order/priority of science classes and given the choice between AP Bio or Honors Chem what is recommended? Also, the USNA website - "Steps for Admission" recommends Honors, AP and International Baccalaureate courses. Are dual enrollment courses considered a poor choice, period? Thanks in advance for any feed back.

I am a homeschool applicant to the C/O 2025. Although I have yet to hear back from USNA, I was accepted into USMA and USAFA. I took a lot of dual-enrollment classes, and, as far as I know, there is no disadvantage compared to other accelerated classes. That being said, I do not have any inside information about this.

Thank you! Did you take AP courses in addition to dual-enrollment, or were all of your college level courses dual enrollment?

Mine were all DE. After this semester ends, I'll have a total of 42 credits.

As the Dr. says above, Chem and Physics. DS (who was homeschooled) validated both Chem 1 and Physics 1 his plebe year, but be ready as Chem 2 and Physics 2 aint easy.....

Interesting! On the USNA website under "Steps for Admission" they recommend Honors and AP courses, so we didn't know if DE classes were "frowned" upon.

I don’t know if they care about order but chemistry is a must. I have a 2023 home schooled mid. Below see the additional information requested :

“Transcript: Home schooled students must provide a transcript and, as a minimum, the transcript must include the following academic information:
Course/Class title
  • Length of course and date completed
  • Grade and Grading scale
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA)
  • Curriculum/Course description***
  • Text/materials used***
*** This means you will need to provide with your transcript a brief synopsis of all courses taken 9th-12th grade and a list of all reference material used including edition numbers.”

This is what was requested then. I don’t know what they currently request. We did community college for chemistry and calculus.

I would suggest the DE classes for your student because he will able to take all the science classes recommended by all the SAs. In the case of DE classes, each course is per semester, giving him the time to take Bio, chem and physics. I would suggest the same for his math courses as well. Be sure to take classes at or above college freshman level. We did it in my son’s jr. year in high school, you can too! Wishing you the best from another homeschool parent!
