How are slots for SS decided?

Besides the basic requirement of having a 3.0 GPA, does the selection committee make selections based on merit, or is it decided geographically? Also, do you recommend submitting test scores even though it's optional? Thanks.

Goose, from the Academy's outreach programs page (https://www.academyadmissions.com/admissions/outreach-programs/summer-seminar/ ) it is stated that selection is based on a "whole person concept". It also lists requirements to submit English, Math and Science grades. So from available information, it would appear that the selection process is more involved than just verifying a 3.0 GPA.

Another thing to note is the option to have your SS application serve as your USAFA application--provided you submit test scores. If your scores meet the minimums or are above, I would suggest submitting them and choosing the OPT in to have your application serve both functions. DS applied to SS and chose to OPT in. He was very glad that he did not need to fill the application out twice. He also was able to make additions and changes to his application, through his portal, during the application process for USAFA.

Keep in mind that the selection criteria for Summer Seminar is typically different than that used for appointments as USAFA will want to use this event to help recruit those which may not otherwise apply to the academy. So... if one does not get selected for Sunner Seminar, they should not take it as an indication not to complete their application to the academy. I know of many current USAFA cadets that were not selected for Summer Seminar (mine included).

Good point, FMHS-79. My DS had incredible test scores and credentials but was not selected for Summer Seminar. In retrospect, we recognized that it was because space is limited, but also that we had indicated that we had already visited the USAFA campus and gotten the full tour. So they probably figured he didn't need Summer Seminar. SS is used as an outreach tool to get promising students interested in the academy. Our son obviously didn't need this.
