How can someone go from Medically Qualified to a Remedial?

A quick question from anyone out here who is familiar with why a candidate could go from "Fully Medically Qualified for Ascension" to "Not Qualified/Remedial"? Nothing new has been submitted, and nothing with DS's status has changed. A waiver was initiated about a month ago, but was cleared by DoDMERB after submission of additional evidence. Now DoDMERB, or someone is asking for remedial information. This is not right, they should have asked for this a month ago, now DS's entire future is in limbo. DoDMERB website is down again, can't even identify the Remedial Codes of 259.01 and 222.24. Any one who can help it is appreciated!!

I can help you with one of the codes:
R259.01 --- NOTE: Consideration for your service academy, ROTC Program, or Uniformed Services University of the Health Services medical waiver has been temporarily deferred pending completion of the following Waiver Authority's request for additional evaluations/information. Waiver processing will continue upon completion and return of requested results to DoDMERB. (PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING) Then it goes into the individual remedials that have been requested. Best of luck to your DS.

During the initial rounds of medical evaluations, DODMERB might request remedial info to aid in a Q or DQ rendering at that stage. Further on, the waiver authority may ask DODMERB to go back to the well for more info, so they can make their waiver decision.

This is all “may” - there is no way of knowing who’s asking for what, and why, in this cyclical process.

@Capt MJ, @Machine11, Thank you for the info on the 259.01 Code. I do not understand why a Waiver Authority would even be involved at this point. The waiver was filed prior to the submission of the AMI, then DoDMERB fully cleared and Medically Qualified our DS. There should not even be a Waiver Authority involved at this point since it has been a month since DoDMERB removed the DQ. My understanding is when DodMERB Medically Qualifies a candidate, there is no longer any need for a Waiver Authority to get involved. If so, they why is a Waiver Authority asking for additional info when our son has been Medically cleared by DoDMERB? Any waivers that were submitted, should have rendered moot when DoDMERB cleared him no?

So as I read this, not only is our DS no longer cleared, but now the "old" waiver is deferred for the new info so he goes right back to being in limbo until whatever they request is complete. Even after a clean bill of health from DoDMERB they can say "no" to DoDMERB and just keep the "old" waiver pending?

I am by no means an expert, but is it possible that it's a mistake? Perhaps your DS can email his contact at DODMERB to confirm. I am new to all of this as well, just learning as my DD goes through the same DQ - Remedial process.

I would highly recommend contacting your DODMERB representative and he/she can provide details as well as who in the Waiver authority to potentially contact to clarify. My DS needed a waiver, had it approved in Dodmerb, then it went back to "need waiver". When contacting them directly, submitting AMI caused the approved waiver to go back to pending, thus requiring the WA to have to re approve. Bottom line: go to the sources in DODMERB and the WA.

DS has already contacted his RC and DoDMERB directly. Hopefully he will get some sort of answer we can all understand today. We are ALL hoping this is "clerical error" and that when DoDMERB notifies WP or the error and that the previous submitted waiver should be rendered moot, that it is taken care of. I don't think we would even be discussing this had everything proceeded as it was supposed to. When you read DoD Inst 6310.03 and DodMERB's FAQ's it does not say anywhere that a SA or ROTC Program can just initiate a waiver for a candidate passing his DOD Medical.
