How is WCS calculated?

I get that the committee goes over the 3q files to narrow down the pool even more. But what I don't understand is how. Do they use the WCS and is that calculated by assigning numerical scores to the three areas of qualification?

Yes, everything you submit in your application is assigned numerical scoring and then the formula you see USMA use is populated with those scores. When they determine slate winners they use the WCS, and then the top number are used for the first round of National Waitlist offers. After the first round, admissions can also take into account other factors like geographic distribution or other class makeup factors. This is why it is important to revise your application as you move through the Fall if your Senior year to add new accomplishments and sports titles, etc..

Thanks so much.

Just keep in mind and read with the perspective that material from service academy consulting for-profit company sites are not official sources. They may have very good insights, but they are not in the Admissions Dept (though they may have been in the past). This is the same advice I would give you for this anonymous internet forum and its posts, including mine - unofficial - unless someone identifies themself as a currently assigned NROTC PNS, AROTC staff officer, or a USCGA staff member, or similar, or Mr. Mullen, Deputy DoDMERB, who posts openly as himself.

MarTac, that was an extremely interesting document. I was especially interested in the statistical material. In addition, the fact that candidates with lower WCS were not infrequently rejected in favor of candidates with higher WCS was...instructive. Thank you for bringing this to my attention

This was done a few years ago, but if you really want to take you mind off of checking your portal every twenty minutes, this is a good source of real data on USMA admissions process and WCS:

The Rand Report surfaces every year here. Interesting reading - but take into account the data set is in the neighborhood of a quarter-century old.
It’s a dynamic system, and no doubt many factors have changed. Overall, it provides broad brush insight into the general model.

“This report analyzes data from United States Military Academy at West Point (USMA) applicants for graduation years 1992 to 2001…”
