How long were you on the wait list for Fort Sill?

My husband is currently at BOLC in Fort Sill, which is also going to be our next duty station, and we are still waiting on a home on base. We got on the wait list early November and was told, "oh we can basically guarantee a home for you by mid-January." But we're coming into February and me and our two kids ended up having to stay behind while my husband went ahead to start BOLC.

Last week we were told that we are second on the wait list (for a 3 bedroom home, specifically). But I'm not sure what that means? How long were you guys on the wait list at Fort Sill? I just want some sort of estimate so I can plan ahead.

(As a side note, we talked about looking at off base housing-- what are your opinions on living off base for your first duty station/in Lawton?)

I can help specifically with that base, but I will tell you that there is a social media page entitled “Moving House for the Military Spouse” that my DIL found to be very helpful with this type of questions.

Reference the question on post waits I am surprised there are wait lists now for housing. I have been to Sill for OBC (BOLC), CCC and was there last from 11-14 as an instructor and there was no wait list for on post housing for CO Grade or FG housing. I recommend you call Corvias (on post housing contractor) weekly and check in with them. They should have stuff coming open now due to mid year PCS season and the fact that they just had a BOLC and CCC class graduate. The deal is once you get the go ahead he may have to move fast to go inspect the quarters and sign for them. Make sure the battery at 1-30th is tracking and they are willing to provide a time for him to pre-inspect the quarters.

That being said, we loved living on post there at Sill specifically in the areas around academic heights and old post quad but if we were going back we would also look off post. Look east of I-44 or west of 67th street for housing and make sure with the kids you check the school districts. The schools vary in quality with some really good choices and some poor choices as well. If you're west of 67th street you can pretty much guarantee a decent neighborhood and the same for the areas east of I-44 of Flower Mound road. Cost of living in Lawton is great and once you get used to it, it is a great family assignment (I enjoyed it much more as a married guy than a bachelor). PM me if you have any other questions reference schools, churches or businesses.

Definitely agree with the above, I lived off post at Sill. The center of Lawton is not great, looking west has nicer neighborhoods and looking east has opportunities for more land. I knew a few people that lived on the south side of town and lived in a nice neighborhood.

Medicine Park or north of Fort Sill is an option too, only knew one person that lived up there though.

Great advice above. I want to second the recommendation to stay on top of the housing contractor. You would be surprised how "things happen" and you move to the top of the list when they want to help you out. This advice applies to all who control the "lists" you experience in the military. Just sayin'.
