how to prepare for us naval academy as a 9th grader?

Go to recruiters talk to them and ask questions.
Ask questions in forms, graduates from the academy, etc.

Apply to Summer Seminar and STEM. They increase your chances of getting in.

Get good grades and try to do AP/ IB classes.

Get community service hours.

Demonstrate that you are a leader. That you create community service groups, etc. show that you have initiative!

Don’t get in trouble (or don’t get caught)

Work out, running and lifting weights.

Be in a team hopefully as a captain.
dont get caught is wild

Hey, I am a current plebe (currently taking a short break from cramming for my 12-week cyber exam tomorrow), and I also started thinking about applying when I was in 9th grade. To add on to all of the other great suggestions, my advice would be to learn how you learn. Develop your study habits and time management skills now and it will only help you in the future (regardless of where you end up). I definitely wish I had learned those skills early on so that I wouldn't have to be teaching them to myself now.

Other random advice that you can do now...do a ton of research; reach out to your blue and gold officer; show that you're a scholar, athlete, and leader (get creative with it, check all the boxes but don't feel the need to fit into a box); don't be a robot, show that you're human in your interviews and essays and such; enjoy civilian life; and have a lot of back-up plans.

No. Based on the coaches I've seen for sports, selecting captains often come from the people who put in the most hard work, think of the team first, and exemplify leadership qualities. Not always the best athletes. The goal shouldn't be to be the star of the team, it should be to be an active part of the team and put forth the best effort. This is what coaches recognize and come time when you are looking for a recommendation letter, will often get a better response. If you can do all of that and be a stellar athlete, that certainly helps!

There are plenty of big fish "stars" in little ponds that get eaten up and spit out at the higher and more competitive areas.

As my son says, people go to a service academy to serve and lead in the armed forces, not to become the next sports star. Everyone at the school is on a full ride scholarship, not just the athletes.
Alas, my kids have had different experiences. . .Two other kinds of Captains. . .
1. Coach has the team vote for captains. Can become a popularity contest, nothing to do with the above superlatives.
2. Player who is a recruit. DS team this past winter voted for captains, and although not one person voted for the player, he was selected as a Co-Captain. . .

Aside from what others have said, curing cancer can surely help

Enjoy your time in high school. Enjoy the time with your teammates and friends. I am very grateful for my appointment but more than anything I miss my sophomore and junior year when I loved going to practice every day and spending time with my teammates. My senior year I felt like I worried too much about getting an appointment and ended up isolating myself. Enjoy every moment.
