I hadn't studied for the PSAT, which wasn't a super smart decision and I could have studied using Khan Academy. I hear they have a good program that is free. I excitedly checked my email. I like the anticipation of looking at a test; this was not an exception. I looked at the results and wasn't really disappointed. I got a 1040 on it. I know this isn't amazing but it isn't really bad either. I plan on working with Khan academy to train for another PSAT or SAT next year. Do you have any tips or recommendations for me?

Study. When you finish studying, study some more. Your academics make up 60% of your file, and an ACT/SAT test score can be the difference between a BFE or a TWL.

I hear positive things about Khan academy, but ultimately its about how much work you put into it. One point can make the difference, so study till you drop, then study some more.

Make sure you link your PSAT College Board results with Khan Academy. I cannot tell you how wonderful Khan Academy is! It uses your PSAT results to customize and tailor lessons according to your strengths and weaknesses. Use this resource diligently and you will continue to see results. Build time into your HW regimen. . .exposure to as many questions consistently is key. SAT tutoring services can be quite expensive, and may not necessarily meet you at your current level of academic need. Khan Academy's ability to access your PSAT or SAT results differentiates the lessons! If you want to be competitive for an Service Academy, shoot above the SAT average of 1300. My son did no outside program. . .only worked with Khan after earning a 1280 on his PSAT. His final SAT score was 1500.

Got it. If I'm not mistaken the other 40% is 30% leadership and 10% physical. I will keep studying.

Fish, your score will come up just by completing another year of school, and taking the test again.
Trying to work a little Khan Academy into your life and routine would benefit you overall. Your SAT score is a huge discriminator for all college apps. The higher the number the more opportunities you will have overall.
You might also wish to take an SAT Prep course offered through your school or during the summer.

Add-on question here:

I’m in 11th grade and the PSAT/NMSQT scores came out today aswell. I got a 1330 which I wasn’t terribly happy about. A month earlier I had already gotten a 1440 on the SAT. If I have valid SAT scores, would my PSAT scores even be taken into account for anything, like SLE for WP?

I took the PSAT my freshman, sophomore and junior year. You can take it 3 times. The one that counts is the one you take your junior year.

Yeah lol. I just asked whether it's 10/11 because a majority take it in those two years, myself included.

Submit your SAT score, not your PSAT -- Solid! Congrats!

Very much agree with this. My son had a very similar positive experience with the Khan Academy - +250 points between PSAT and final SAT in October.

CORRECT! Your PSAT Scores don't matter if you have SAT scores.

PSAT counts for national Merit Scholarships (should you not get into a SA).
