I have all my shots and stuff up to date. I was wondering about the yellow fever shot. First off why do we need and second, would it be best to get it now or wait till the academy? Thanks.

I don't know why we need it but I was talking to my doctor and he said it was really hard to get but sometimes your state department may have it. Personally, I'm getting mine at the uscga

You never know where your training may take you.

In the past, cadets have traveled to and disembarked in Latin America and South America, where an immunity to Yellow Fever is advisable.

You take it because they tell you to. And it's true, you never know where the job will take you.

Case and point: I have 3 friends going to Colombia this summer as part of their 3/c summer training. Last year around half a dozen cadets did a cruise along the West African coast. Like LITS and Luigi both said, you never know.

that was me. i got every shot on the sheet....twice over

I had to do a second round of Hep B shots until I could prove that I had already had the full three series.....

Originally had it done in middle school, but lost the documentation.

Shots only hurt a very short time, but they can be very helpful....especially when you travel.

Shot

Get as many shots now, but yellow fever shot in civilian world can be
expensive. If cost is a factor, let Uncle Sam give you the shot.

Good Luck To All

My advice, get them now rather than later...in case you have any kind of reaction...much better to lose some time now than in swab summer.

Interesting - I just tried to make an appointment to get the yellow fever immunization at our county health department, and they wouldn't do it. They said that unless I can tell them the country to which she will travel and it is included on their list of "required countries," they can't give the immunization. So, I guess my daughter will have to wait until she gets to CGA for that one!! Did anyone have any success in obtaining this shot?

Getting the Yellow Fever vaccine as well as the Smallpox vaccine outside of official Govt channels may prove difficult for incoming swabs, it may be best to get them on R-Day with the rest of your shipmates.

Yellow Fever Immunization

The medical information sent to appointees did say that many cadets opt to have that immunization after they get to the CGA. However, if you want it ahead of time, it should be available locally. Just ask someone that has ever done overseas travel or medical work (travel offices and college overseas programs can tell you where to go as well). My son has the yellow fever immunization because we traveled to Kenya for some medical missions work. In our case we went to our university medical center, and they have a clinic specifically for travel/occupational medicine that can provide those services--but yes, as someone has already mentioned, it will cost more money, so CGA is probably the way to go.

Luigi - is the CGA requiring the Small Pox vaccine?

According to this March 03 2008 document.....

COMMANDANT INSTRUCTION 6230.10 - US COAST GUARD SMALLPOX VACCINE PROGRAM (SVP)

....all active duty USCG personnel must be vaccinated against smallpox.

1. THE COAST GUARDS SMALLPOX VACCINATION PROGRAM (SVP) IS OUTLINED
IN REFERENCES A, B AND C. TRAINEE PERSONNEL MUST BE SCREENED AND
IMMUNIZED AS REQUIRED. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, ALL TRACENS, THE
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CENTER, ATC MOBILE/CGAS CLEARWATER AND THE
COAST GUARD ACADEMY WILL SCREEN CADETS, OFFICER CANDIDATES,
RECRUITS, AVIATORS IN TRANSITION TRAINING AND "A" SCHOOL TRAINEES
FOR ENTRY INTO SVP AND IMMUNIZE THOSE ELIGIBLE.

you get smallpox as a 3/c now. i wouldnt worry too much about getting vaccines. they really dont cause that much pain (smallpox being the exception) so you should be fine to get a few of them at the academy.
