Impact to applications?

As if this process is not stressful enough, with all the announced school cancelations/switch to online and social distancing requirements in communities around the country, I wonder how this will impact the application process?

My DS is scheduled to attend Boys State and Summer Seminar so wonder if those will happen. With school spring sports likely canceled (so no varsity letters this year?) and volunteer/community service in our area on hold, I know his application may be different than he imagined. Will AP tests go on as planned and if so, how will attending classes online vs. at school impact how students do?

How will admissions take these things into consideration? I know no one has any answers and we have to wait and see. Assume there are lots of you in the same boat.

Schools here are now officially closed for the rest of the school year. My son's school is working to move online in a couple of weeks but is unclear how they will really be ready for and take their AP exams. Volunteer positions and many usual leadership opportunities are canceled or on hold until further notice. All spring sports are canceled.

Any ALOs out here have any insight on how admissions will consider this when evaluating applicants?

Almost everyone will be in the same boat. Advice is just to relax, control what you can control, and make the best of whatever situation you are placed in.

If anything they may weigh Senior year classes, grades, activities, and standardized testing a little more than usual but I am just guessing here.

Also in the same boat and wonder how this will affect the current juniors. My internship, sports, Boys State, and 7 AP tests have been put aside. This will be a big challenge, but I am thankful for my health. Sadly many volunteer activities are cancelled due to proximity but I am actively searching for activities in my area.

as BBQ said, everyone will be in the same boat. Definitely be a whole candidate review and hopefully those applying have been continually evolving and were not waiting til now to bump up their resumes.

Something for current juniors to think about: Since everyone applying will have gone through this same situation, what are you going to do during this time to make yourself stand out? Are you going to just fret and worry, or are you going to overcome and shine? Make this time of your life a story that you can share during your interviews and essays next year that will get people to think, “Wow, we need to have this kid at USAFA!”.

This is an opportunity for those seeking appointments to think outside of the box, true a lot has been cancelled, but there are most definitely opportunities for young people to help their communities, especially in these trying times. Develop a plan and execute it, part of being in military; here is a problem, now solve it. Good luck to all, you got this, now is the time to seize the day and help where and how you can.
