Injury After DoDMERB Clearance

DS is currently cleared by DoDMERB and we know the requirements to submit for waiver if an injury happens. Well it happened and DS fractured his cheekbone while wrestling. This happened in December and he will be cleared for by the doctor to return to wrestling “Fit for Full Activity” with no restrictions in 2 weeks. We were waiting for his follow up exam in two week so that we could submit all relevant paperwork (and in hopes that his appointment would come in). Here are my questions:
1. He has a principal nomination; will this prevent an appointment from being sent out until the waiver is approved or will they send it as a conditional pending waiver approval?
2. Should we wait 2 weeks for our doctor to do the followup appointment before notifying DoDMERB?

Thanks in advance to all that reply.

You are required to notify DODMERB, as you already know. IMO I would let them know asap so any process needed (and I would expect at least AMI requests) can get started. Waiting isn’t going to change anything as far as the process goes.

Just understand that a civilian DR is not who determines if he is fit for military duty. And that the DODMERB process asses whether he meets published standards (Q) or not (DQ). Beyond that, of found DQ, each waiver authority decides whether to seek a waiver, or not.

There is a set process to work through. Don’t be afraid of it. I’m sorry your son is injured…wrestling is a tough sport (I had 3 boys wrestle).

Also, every year there are LOA’a issues, with conditions that must be met for the appointment. Medical resolution, in your case. It’s not uncommon. You must be fully qualified to receive the appointment.

He will need to work through the process. SOMETIMES, an appointment is offered, with a clause that they must receive a final OK at Iday from navy medical. My oldests plebe assigned roommate was one of these situations. He was medically refused. ALWAYS have a back up plan.

@justdoit19, thanks for the reply. Copy all. I also had my son talk to his BGO to give him a heads up. I am sure the BGO has some tribal knowledge and can calm my son down. I am used to having all the answers for him regarding Navy, but the longer I get from retirement, the less I know.
