Instrument to CGA?

My DD is hoping to play in the ensembles, and she plays the euphonium. Would she bring her own? Or would it be provided by CGA? Maybe she would bring it back after the Christmas break?

Here’s the phone directory, look for Cadet Instrumental Activities Director. I am sure they would be pleased if your daughter called to express interest and inquire about how to manage her instrument.

I’m sure others with direct knowledge will post. I know USNA provides instruments, so CGA likely does.

My son plays the tuba and the academy gave him an instrument to play for windjammers, regimental band, and the concert band. He says they have other instruments as well, so she would not have to bring her instrument. There is also a swab band during swab summer which gives the swabs a little break during practice times.

That is good to know! She is going on the admitted student overnight on March 20th, and she hopes to find out more about the musical side of things. She will be MES and play volleyball, so she cannot be in Windjammers. But she cannot imagine four years without playing music or having music in her life.

You can also bring a personal instrument. On R day there is a drop off point for personal instruments and sports equipment. During coaches time in Swab summer cadets will be able to access the instrument or sports equipment. Many cadets with small instruments such as trumpet trombone and saxophone do bring personal instruments. It is an option. Regimental Band does not conflict with sports since it is conducted during drill periods. Also the jazz band meets in the evening after sports as does the cadet orchestra. There are many opportunities to continue as an instrumental musician at USCGA in addition to the Windjammers.

My DD played with the Windjammers 4C year. She used their instrument, had a bunch of fun, traveled to NYC and then jumped to rowing for her 3C season. Definitely contact the director to get details about handling your own instrument.

Regarding the swab band, be prepared to be surprised. At one point my DD disappeared from PDuddy for a few days so we were kind of wondering what had happened. Then at some full battalion event she appeared in the band with a french horn, which she hadn't played in a couple years. Other parents were laughing to see how well the investment in a decade of violin lessons paid off now that their child could carry a bass drum. You never know with the swab band.

My daughter will also be playing on the volleyball team and wants to continue playing her instrument (tuba). She’s hoping to learn more too.
