Curious to know if any of the admissions staff provided details on where they are in the process at the most recent CVW.

There is some really great "intel" at the USNA.edu website, which states "Students will be notified of their status via email no later than April 15." Keep in mind, applications are still open for another week.

What do you mean “applications are still for another week”?

NASS applications are still open. However, I believe the OP was referring to Class of ‘23 admissions intel.

Sorry, I thought it was another NASS question (read before coffee).
Same answer for Admissions though . April 15.

My DS and I were there this past weekend, and unfortunately, there was no intel given for the c/o '23 admissions cycle. I will say that there were 3 admissions officers fully engaged with CVW parents Thursday evening and all day Friday, so I would assume little was done in terms of notifications during that time.

They did encourage (and emphasized several times) that current juniors should apply for NASS, which seemed to contradict the information we read on this forum that juniors invited to a CVW would not be offered a spot at NASS. My DS applied to NASS the day the application opened, but is still waiting for notification either way. We are in a very competitive district, so it won't be a surprise if DS is not offered NASS.

The CVW overall was excellent, for both myself and DS. I was able to ask specific questions of the admissions officers and met some great parents. He was surprised (and encouraged) that in the room where he stayed, 3 out of the 4 mids did NOT get in to USNA right out of high school. He came away from the weekend assured that USNA is his first choice, and is prepared to work hard to reach that goal, including attending a Plan B school and re-applying if he is not appointed this year.

@SW18, My son was at the CVW this weekend (as a junior) as well. I wish I could have made the trip. thanks for the info as he is also still waiting on NASS. Would love any additional info from the parent program.

@williamsdr3 - How did your DS like the CVW? Did he talk non-stop when he got back?
What did he learn that he didn't know before?

Don’t forget that applying to NASS kicks off the official USNA application process (in lieu of having to fill out the preliminary candidate questionnaire), so that might be the impetus of asking attendees to still fill out the NASS application. Otherwise, one could wait until the NASS application closes to fill out the PCQ.

That was exactly my DS experience with CVW and it helped to view USNA as a two year application process. He is now eagerly anticipating I Day.

@THParent and any others who may be interested. My 11th grade son really enjoyed his CVW. It is not his first choice academy at this early stage in the game but he would be thrilled to go there. He wants to compare to his first choice (USMA) at SLE but that will be a different "camp-like" experience. He did talk nonstop for about an hour when we picked him up from the airport. He seemed most impacted by the 5:30 a.m. workout (4:30 a.m. to him) in 30 degrees in the mud. He described it in great detail and said it was the first time he ever felt exhilarated from a workout rather than wrestling. He said the camaraderie during the workout was amazing. He was disappointed he wasn't allowed to participate in the part of the workout where they wrestled each other on their knees (liability). He said campus was pretty, food was fine, classes were small but he was embarrassed for the teacher and students of the English class that it appeared no one had read the assigned book. He thought the English teacher's discussion questions and style were outstanding and the chemistry class was really interesting as well as the leadership class. Said the plebes were nice to him and appreciated the cookies he and his girlfriend had baked for them. He had to sleep in all his clothes and his coat in his sleeping bag (coming from TX). The Glee Club performed at an event he went to and they were incredible singers (my son is an outstanding singer who would be interested in such an activity). Students were having hard time staying awake in general and use off periods for naps (as expected).

He thought the students were pretty similar to regular high school students (as opposed to being so much "older") but "like high school students in dorms." He said they were "bros" which is what he calls his male friends so I think that means he thought the plebes were cool. We were all a little disappointed to hear about the vaping going on (I don't think it happened in front of him) but it is a big problem at our high school, too.

Funniest thing was that after the visit he rode on the subway for an hour from Maryland to Northern Virginia to visit relatives. The train was empty part of the time so he started working out, doing push-ups, etc. and wanted to try pull-ups but was afraid he would break the bar. My son works out during sports and is starting to train for the CFA but does not work out "for fun" so this was very surprising. He was definitely inspired by the visit!

Some of my notes from the parent briefings at last weekend's CVW:
  • Don't wait! Submit everything as soon as you possibly can. Admissions officers can give feedback on what needs improvement if application documents are submitted early, but they are slammed in December-January.
  • While you can submit additional LORs, they don't hold much weight unless they reveal something about an applicant's character not already apparent in the rest of their application. Big names don't add any value, and they want quality vs. quantity in LORs.
  • The midshipman panel suggested that for interviews, have confidence in yourself and your answers. Do what sets you apart, and show dedication to what you do. Apply again if you don't get in the first time. (Two of the four midshipmen on the panel did not get in the first time.)
  • The Academic Support department has a wealth of opportunities for help and support. If they admit you, they will do everything they can to help you graduate (which is a paradigm shift from years ago).
My DS was excited to tell me when I picked him up that in the space of about 6 hours Friday, he got to ask questions of a NPR war correspondent (special guest speaker in a US Gov't class) as well as hear from 2 Admirals, 1 Marine Colonel, 1 executive/CEO, and an astronaut. He went to a Calculus 2 class and thought it was "easy" (he's currently taking Pre-Calculus and Trig), went to a Chemistry study group and got to do titrations in Chem lab the next day, then US Government.

Hi All - I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the CVW confirmation e-mail that a candidate is supposed to receive. My son received an invite for the week of April 25th back on March 12th. He filled out the form immediately and got acknowledgement of the form, however, he did not receive a confirmation e-mail that his spot was secure. Have people seen that it takes longer than the 2 weeks? Since today is formally 14 days, we have called the office and left a message but the waiting is killing my son as he really wants to visit and shadow a student. He is also going to NASS this summer so this invite was extra special to him. Any info or insight would be appreciated.

First suggestion, you are just starting a process that is a marathon, not a sprint. USNA will not provide instant gratification, and you will often find yourself waiting. Be patient, and USNA will handle your inquiry in due course.

Thanks for the input - I figure its a hurry up and wait type of situation - just thought I would try to find out if others are experiencing the same thing as a couple of people who have had their Junior invited for the April session receive their confirmation e-mail within a day.
