Hello,

I heard something about gaining internet/social media privileges as a 4/c. When do gain internet privileges?

Thank you for any information!

Before arriving to swab summer, you have to deactivate all social media accounts. When you arrive at swab summer, you turn in your phone. The only communication you have is by writing letters, although you will get your phone back briefly after the Mystic Flag Ceremony (about half way through the summer) and during your week on the tall ship Eagle at the end of the summer.
After swab summer is over and you become a 4/c cadet, you will get your phone back. However, you still cannot use social media. You can use the internet for general research and for emails, but no social media.
Usually, after a certain percentage of the 4/c class passes their boards (which tests all the indoc Coast Guard military information you will be studying all year), then you will gain back social media privileges. The date of the boards varies, but this year the 4/c had their boards last weekend (2 March). The 4/c cadets also gain other privileges at this time as well.

It varies by year. I think the class of 25 got Carry On in early April.

What does "full carry on" mean?
Full carry on is the point in time (after passing boards and being routed for) when 4/c cadets receive all the privileges of a 3/c cadet. Those things include having social media back, no squaring in Chase hall, being able to talk to other 4/c in the peaway, not having to be braced up while eating in the wardroom, no squaring meals, being able to talk to other 4/c while eating. Things like that. Basically being a normal person again! LOL

Point of clarification. Squaring meals didn't happen this year.
Fair point. I think they still had to keep their eyes in the boat while eating in the wardy unless glancing down at their food, or if someone is speaking to them. It's enough to where my kid would still avoid the wardroom for meals on occasion as not have to eat braced up, etc. LOL.

What is squaring meals?
Swabs and 4/c are supposed to look straight ahead (eyes on the boat) while eating. In addition, if they have to square their meals, they are supposed to bring whatever they pick up from their plate (in their hand or on a spoon or fork) straight upward, and then bring it straight toward their mouth at a 90 degree angle. Makes eating a bit more difficult when you can't see what you are picking up and when you have to do that motion. Sandwiches are popular when available since it is easier to hold something in your hands than to try to get food on a utensil when you can't look down at your plate.

Swabs and 4/c also have to square their corners everywhere they go, taking every corner by making a sharp 90 degree turn. There are several other rules that swabs and 4/c have to follow as well.

Traditionally, it's eating meals moving your fork from your plate up and to your mouth in a 90 degree angle. This is while looking straight ahead with your "eyes in the boat" not being able to look down at your food.

It was sort of modified this year due to concerns of kids not getting enough food.
