Ive been watching these forums for a good couple months, made an account a bit ago but never posted anything until now. Im currently a freshman in highschool, ive been interested in aviation and the air force in general since 7th-8th grade. Im taking advanced science, history, math, and english right now, the only advanced class im not in is spanish. Im also taking an intro to engineering design and modeling class (as well as a half year course of cooking but I dont think that matters as much here, haha). Sports-wise I do brazilian jiu jitsu, one of the only girls in my academy :) and im set to start competeing next month (I would have sooner but covid got in the way). Im not on any school sports teams at the moment though. Im super into planes, my all time favorite being the a12 oxcart, and more than anything want to be an air force pilot. Im a bit worried that I wont be able to handle the stress of usafa / dont know if it will be right for me, but ive got time to think and to prepare myself so it should be all good. Thanks for reading!!

Welcome.

It is good that you are exploring and learning about the aviation opportunities early. Keep good grades, and stay fit (Jiu Jitsu should help you there). Strongly recommend you try for track or cross country as running will be a big component of the military.

One tip: Watch your punctuation and grammar in everything you post. Granted this is an anonymous forum, but it is a habit that will serve you well in the future regardless of career.

Best of luck to you.

As I have read here on these SA forums a black belt is looked on the same way as a school varsity sports type is as far as admissions.

Competing shows an added layer of accomplishment. So extra effort may well pay off.

My only suggestion——if flying and serving are your two main goals then why limit yourself to only one SA? Two or more give you better chances.

USNA as well as USMA both have a lot of aviation slots.

As far as not knowing if you can deal with the pressure of a SA——I felt the same way for both of mine. I was doubtful they could make it. One proved me wrong. One is proving me wrong.

the process works. Somehow. If you can get in you can graduate. I am absolutely sure of that.

To Piggyback on Bacsi-

If flying is your goal, also look into USMMA. The local USMMA rep swears every year at academy night for the local MOC and during the MOC nom interview for our son that the USMMA has allocated flight school slots for each service that go unfilled each year. We never took the time to verify it but if I was in your position I would sure find out.

Too get some visibility into the all the academies, if it's possible for you, look into the summer programs which could even be this summer and when you get closer and start your applications, all of them seem to offer day and overnight visits where you can shadow a plebe, not sure that term works for Air Force, into their classes, etc.

I heard the same thing from a USMMA grad (a friend of my dad) who became a Navy pilot.

Welcome.

If you work hard in high school and do well, you will have nothing to fear about doing well at an Academy.

And cooking is awesome. I was one of the first males to take cooking in my high school many years ago. I figured it would be better than wood shop later in life. I was right - I eat every day.
