Is the SAT necessary for USAFA applicants?

One of my counselors has been telling my class that taking the SAT is generally not important "unless you're applying to one of the Ivies on the east coast" (to paraphrase). Most of the juniors and seniors at my high school haven't taken it or don't plan to. I remember reading on this forum that USAFA will accept an SAT score if you have one while requiring an only ACT score, or something along those lines. Could someone please elaborate on USAFA's use of the SAT? Is it worthwhile to take it even if it isn't required?

You can take the SAT OR the ACT OR both. They will use your highest sub scores. Some say it's better to do both because you can be better at one form of the test than the ither. I just took the ACT because where I'm from there are few SAT's offered. Just taking the ACT worked out fine for me.

I think it is either SAT or ACT but they encourage you to take both multiple times in case one or the other goes better for you. My DS took only SAT but he took it 3 times in order to inch his scores up. He wanted to take the ACT as well but decided he was satisfied with his SAT results.

DD only took the ACT, twice with the writing section, and twice without. The SAT is not prevalent in our area of the US.

Who knows, you might do better on the SAT than the ACT. Seems worth a shot!

Personally, I did better on the SAT and only submitted those scores. Taking the SAT won't close any doors - only open them.
