JAG

Very different from TV. My in-house counsel was a JAG (his son went to Air Force). He said most of his cases were alcohol and drug infractions and AWOL

Yes, as a junior JAG you do a lot of the grunt work, but as '85 points out, there is an opportunity for a lot of trial work. More senior JAG's can advance into a wide variety of roles, including Military Judges and Staff Judge Advocate at Major Commands (kinda like in house general counsel).
Navy has has an Office of General Counsel , government service employees that handle much of the day to day demands of procurement, HR, etc.

As OldSWO said, there are a lot of USNA and other Service Academy grads in the legal professsion. (There are at least two in my class on this Forum !). Several years ago someone put together a directory through word or mouth networking, and I used it as a handy reference when retaining attorney for work around the country. That directory has been more or less replaced by Social Media networking such as Linked In, but I still look for a Service Academy connection when I look for local counsel.
