Joining reserves over summer

Would it be beneficial to join the reserves during the summer going into junior year? That way if I don't get into West Point, I can go to college for (almost) free and then reapply next year. Pros? Cons? Thoughts and opinions? Also, does this disqualify me for the congressional nomination?

As a side note, I am about 80% sure that I will go full career in the Army. So I am completely willing to commit this time into the reserves.

Should also checkout National Guard

Once you complete your basic training, you will qualify for a RC nomination (just need to get your company commander's endorsement).

Getting RC nomination is great as there are 85 appointments set aside and historically they are not filled. However, I have seen more and more RC nomination related appointments.

You still can apply for Congressional nomination and you still have to get qualified. If you are not acadmeically qualified, more than likely you will be sent to the Prep School.

Good luck.

Art, that is not a bad backup plan, but please be aware that you can expect to apply to West Point DURING your BCT or AIT. I made this mistake and was not able to send in my full application. I went to NGCSU for a semester in the Corp of Cadets then deployed. While in Afghanistan, I managed to apply and got an appointment for Class of 2016.

It is a path with many unexpected loopholes that may or may not be beneficial.
