Hi, I am hoping someone @GWU PNS (emeritus) or others with more BGO experience @usna1985, @Old Navy BGO, @NavyHoops can help. I have a candidate that is eligible to apply for the JROTC Honor Unit Nomination. He is doing his due diligence and applying for all noms which he is eligible.

He participates in JROTC, Army, that's all we have down here. The USNA form only lists MCJROTC and NROTC for the nomination.

I did look at West Point's form, theirs lists Army JROTC.

If you are in an Honor Unit that is Army, can you only apply for a nomination to WP? And my candidate cannot apply for a USNA or USAFA Honor Unit nomination?

This line stood out to me from WP's website:
  • Applicants currently enrolled in an Army Junior or Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program or an ROTC program from another branch of service that has been designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction are eligible for a nomination in this category.
If 'from another branch of service that has been designated .......' part is true, then he can't 'check a box' on either application, would he just write it in? Somewhat confusing and wanting to give him accurate guidance.

Not any of the BGO’s you listed, but do have experience with this. Yes, an honor unit from another branch is eligible.

One caveat, is that the student must have been a member for over a year. IOW, they can’t join a unit senior year, and be eligible. They would have had to be a member for an entire school year (so, presumably, all of their junior year).

Also, as an FYI, this only applies to HS JROTC. Not regular college ROTC.

He can further clarify with his admissions counselor, if necessary. This is a nice additional nom, for sure!

My son received a nomination for USNA from AJROTC unit with honor distinction. In the USNA portal, it shows up as ROTC Honor Unit as the source.
 
I have the same experience as @NCA. One of my AFJROTC students received three "ROTC Honor Unit"nominations for USNA, USMA and USMMA a few years ago. He is now at USMMA.

The USNA form 1110-5 appears to be the one to use for USNA. I placed an image of a portion of the form pertaining to the Honor Unit below . . .

I’ve seen that form. I took that to be for a college level prospective graduate. That part speaks to Honor School vs Honor Unit. Maybe I’m mixing apples and oranges.

Thank you. I will provide the candidate the link and advise he ask his admission counselor how to proceed with the form in terms of box to check. Unless I find instructions for the form first. Appreciate the forum!
 
Note the stipulation for A/AF JROTC units, the individual must also be an honor graduate. To be honest, I’m not sure what gets someone designated as an “honor graduate.” Also…the 20 appointments is inclusive of all JROTC and NROTC nominations submitted to USNA…it isn’t 20 for JROTC and another 20 for NROTC…another reason to apply to all nominating sources.

(4) 20 nominated by the Secretary of the Navy, under regulations prescribed by him, from the honor graduates of schools designated as honor schools by the Department of the Army, the Department of the Navy, or the Department of the Air Force, and from members of the Naval Reserve Officer’s Training corps.

The most complete information is on the webpage, not the form itself, and the page is for "ROTC units" in general, which makes it easy to miss.

Army or AF honor units can submit 3 nominations. The limit of 3 is specific to USNA.
 
Ok, so that form is for the recommender. How does the candidate apply to their recommender for the nomination? I’m not at my desk, traveling so I’m not doing the legwork myself this evening but will tomorrow. Seems to be several pieces to this.

There is no form for that unless the JROTC school has its own. For my DS, the linked form was given to the commandant who sent it to USNA.

Signed letter of recommendation on unit/school letterhead is required. General endorsement letter any JROTC instructor (being a retired military officer) should be familiar with. There's no template or anything, but it's very likely that instructor has written more than a few endorsements for Soldiers applying to commissioning programs before, it's the same deal.

The unit might have a selection process to determine the top 3 if there are many candidates, that's up to them. Not unlike congressional nominations.

Our town and program are so small it’s not likely the instructor has seen many if any of these. I appreciate the info.
 
I’m really proud of my candidate who learned this nomination from his CVW last weekend. He is listening and capitalizing. Love that.

I think that the thought that they'd be familiar was not based on doing them in JROTC but instead during their 20+ years in
the military prior to becoming a JROTC instructor.
 
I only mentioned that because for other commissioning programs and the USNA enlisted application, the endorsement has a very specific format with information that needs to be included (down to certain sentences with exact verbiage).

This is not that. Do not refer to the OPNAV instruction for officer programs (an odd situation where you don't reference the instruction). Just write a letter stating how good Jonny is as a student/cadet and how good they will be as an officer. Someone doing a google search for how to write one of these things might stumble across the wrong information.
