I need some clarification bc everything I read is a little different.
I am applying when the scholarship opens in June.
If I am considered for a scholarship, when do you find that out? I am confused as to how you go about applying for college- not knowing if you have a scholarship or not. That will impact my decision as to where I apply.
I saw something that said you list your top choices- let’s suppose I don’t get into my top choices but i do receive a scholarship- can I refuse the Scholarship if I don’t like the ROTC programs at different schools I DO get accepted to? How binding is ROTC after you apply? Hope this made sense. I am looking for the timeline and order of when notifications are rolled out.
Thank you for any info.

This is the crux some people find themselves in. And the nervous, antsiness this time of year. Head over to the ROTC “waiting” threads to get a taste of what life is like, this time of year, for waiting applicants.

Throwing there the medical clearance piece and it can get even dicier. For example, you get the scholarship, that triggers the DODMERB exam that needs to find you qualified (or waived from the ROTC program), and that can add the challenge you describe.

It’s always recommended to consider this when selecting your school. In case the scholarship doesn’t come through, and you must figure out financials.

Have you looked at the High School ROTC application process online?

Are you also applying to a SA?

I am not applying to a service academy. My #1 is Villanova. I’ve talked to 3 different guys in the program and they really are liking it there. Thank you for replying. When do I find out if I’m even in the running for a scholarship? How quickly do they advance you to the next stage of the application?

Read through the ROTC threads.

In a nutshell, you may, or may not, be reviewed and/or awarded when the boards meet. The meet however many times. Idk which Program you are talking about. My guys applied AF and Navy. Both were awarded in the first board. Not all applicants are. You can j crease your odds of early review by having your best application ready, interviews done, and all submitted before the first board convenes. BUT….and a biggie here, is you still may not be decided upon until later.

I’m not an expert on the process. There are a few posters here who are more in the know. Hopefully they will pop in. Or go to the ROTC forums and look them up (@GWU PNS (emeritus) is one).

The jist of it, is that you could be an early award (fall), or one still waiting until spring. Or longer if you have medical DQ’s to deal with.

Good luck!

A HUGE ‘also’, is that you “can walk” on to ROTC programs, and be awarded a side load scholarship, if not awarded directly from high school (assuming you meet the qualifications).

You will see that there are still candidates waiting to find out about AROTC scholarships. The earliest possible, is the first board which is in October. My DS got his in March. The third board is still waiting.

Exactly. Check out the threads.

Best first steps are to reach out to the PMS and/or recruiting officer at Villanova to ask all of these questions. They will be happy to talk with you and are your best first contact. Both my sons did this early on at their desired schools and programs. There should be a website for the AROTC unit there with an email for the recruiting officer or PMS. Most will set up a call or a zoom meeting. Just be sure to have written down all your questions (about the school, scholarship and the unit). Good luck to you!

Great point. Both of my guys actually visited the unit and school. Also a good thing to do, if you can!

Villanova is a cross town affiliate with Widener. The PMS and ROO are amazing people and I thoroughly enjoyed my interview with them. The PMS saw that my top choice school was Notre Dame and lucky for me he knew the PMS at Notre Dame (he was a Villanova grad). It truly is a small world! After my interview he put in a good word for me with the Notre Dame PMS who ended up helping me get into Notre Daem. I’m really thankful to the Widener PMS for that. I wish you the best of luck! I interviewed sometime around the end of September and found out I won the 4 year school end of October from the first board.
