Good morning,

Quick question but does a LASIK waiver need to be approved before service selection packets are due? I'm a 2/C MIDN and I need to get LASIK ASAP (since it takes 6 months before waiver is submitted) and I was wondering if its too late.

Thanks, V/R

DS had lasik winter break of 2C year so that he was ready to revisit flight surgeon when he went back in Fall to be retested. You are probably cutting it close.

Take this with grain of salt bc this was process two years ago: Most people in my unit get it during early Spring semester junior year. You do need to get on it soon, but it's not too late. Not sure where you're from, but from consultation to actually having the surgery should only be a 2-3 week turnaround time. The day before consultation, People signed the form with the ROTC unit saying they were assuming risk by taking the surgery.

Curious... I understand the health risk. Since LASIK is an elective surgery, is there also a financial risk if they end up non-commissionable?

(edited to spell LASIK correctly)

You can ask if your unit has a checklist similar to this one on the SC official NROTC page that may help you outline a plan: https://www.sc.edu/about/offices_and_divisions/rotc/navy/media/prk_info.pdf

As others noted, in NROTC this is an elective surgery with risk so understand the waiver you'll sign and risk you are taking and costs - confirm the timeframe you'll need post-op to heal before rejoining unit physical activities and before attending your 1/c cruise (used to be 3 months for the cruise, I think), and all approvals needed. Understand where you'll be in six months from the date of surgery and your options to not have to travel then (say you go to school in Hawaii but live in Maine - would you have to go back to the surgeon forfollow-up visits and post-op paperwork filled-out. Some chains / private practices will allow you to see a doc in your home area without cost - some will not. I'd also ensure you are competitive for the role you are seeking if you are only getting this in order to service-select aviation - GPA, evals, tier major, ASTB scores, etc - have an honest discussion with your LT/ chain of command.

Research and invest in a good surgeon - DS now sees better than 20/20 following lasik surgery - a vast difference pre and post op.
