letter of assurance???

Our Congressman's office (PA-18) was put on CC for the LOA my son received last year. But, this is the GOVERNMENT. When we called our Congressman's office, they appeared unaware. We faxed it directly to the staffer who was responsible for the nomination process in the office. I'd recommend you contact your Congressman's/Senator's office and do the same.

Thanks for the quick reply, chief_bs. I'll have DS do that on Monday!

The person responsible for SA Nominations told me to notify them in case I was awarded a LOA. Therefore, I think it's safe to say you should contact them even if they were CC'ed.

Branching off of this, if I have received a Letter of Assurance, passed my CFA, passed DODMERB, and my file is complete, what are my chances of getting in? I still need a nomination, but what are the odds I won't get a nomination even though I have a LOA?

You just need a nom

Once you have an LOA, you just need a nom. ANY nom to fulfill the legal requirement. Your congressman/senator has 5 slots at the Academy total. They typically fill one/year and there is a "floater" (my term). In PA-18, Tim Murphy uses the competitive selection process. In this process, he can nominate up to 10 candidates, with West Point making the final selection. Each of those 10 has a nomination (fulfilling the legal requirement). Tim Murphy had two open slots this year (class of 2015). He had two candidates with LOAs (my son was one). He got 4 total appointments into WP. The LOAs didn't count against his allocation of 2. These extra slots came from other sources (congressmen/senators who have not filled their allocations, etc.)

It is my understanding that if your congressman/senator uses the ranking process (he selects a primary and ranks others) all those who are on the list are nominated (even if they are not the "primary").

Any nom is as good as any other in fulfilling the legal requirement for one. Senator, congressman, VP. For a kid with an LOA, more nominations than one doesn't make any difference.

And Medical qualification.
And passing CFA
And a complete file.

And "continued excellent work in school"

And once appointed... get those grey cards, security forms, etc in. Do not wait for the deadlines!

I attended two AIMs this weekend, and the regional commander (Maj. D.) stated that all LOAs were allocated at the beginning of September. There will not be any additional sent out for the Class of 2016.

Applicants for the Class of 2016 are of very high caliber, all with outstanding files. There are certainly many more qualified than will be offered appointments. He stated that if you don't get a nomination from any of the sources, you may still be one of the 300 offered appointments from the NWL. He relayed a story from last June where he tried to contact a candidate the Thursday before R-Day, but the person was not available due to his being on vacation in Korea; he was not reachable. So the appointment was offered to the next person on the list on the Friday before R-Day.

He himself got his appointment in late May (a Class of 2001 WP grad), and mentioned that Col Endres, head of WP Admissions got his appointment a few days before his R-Day.

All potential applicants were encouraged to take SATs and ACTs frequently, to open their files as soon as possible, to apply to attend SLS, and to get their files completed as early as possible. Also advised that before the end of your Junior year, to get your transcripts on the way to West Point; and to have ready access during the summer to your college counselors and teachers you plan to use for references. Those who complete their file before their senior year starts have the best chance to get an LOA.
I got my LOA last week lol. I guess i'm lucky ahhaha :D

The LOAs have gone out. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. A handfull of LOAs might still be sent but very, very few.

Without going into a long talk - each Congressmen can USE ANY CRITERIA THEY WANT to determine who gets their nominations. Some nominate 10 people or 5 people and let WP choose but that is not a requirement. Others give one person their principle nomination. Of course, WP must declare you as FULLY QUALIFIED or you do not get in regardless of your nominations. Last year one congresswoman from the Berkerly area refused to use her nominations as an anti-military statement. Of course, Admissions was able to take those nominations for other deserving applicants.
