It’s come to my attention that I haven’t introduced myself fully, even though I’ve been on the forum for almost a year. So, hi everyone! This is who I am!

HS Junior female, currently 16.
Large, competitive school (roughly 500 kids in my class). Very competitive nomination district.
Top 10% of class, not sure where I rank. I only know the percentage.
Athletics: Cross country for three years, track for two, ice hockey for three. Varsity hockey(3) and cross country(2). I’ve played club hockey for 8 years, 10 years of playing in total.
GPA: 4.321 out of 5. Weighted.
School Clubs: New Entrant Assistance Team member (3 years, will most likely be a president next year), Humans of SHS (interviewed people, 1 year), National Chinese Honor Society (1 year, spanned over sophomore and junior year, will be continuing next year). Choir member for 2 years, soon to be 3, and honor choir member for 1 year, soon to be 2 years.
Outside of School: I’ve been a member of the Civil Air Patrol since October 2022, will earn my Mitchell in May (2nd Lt). I will be attending Legislative Day on February 29th representing MA. I’m currently working towards a private pilot’s license through Aim High Flight Academy through the Air Force, too!
Volunteering: I volunteer through local hockey clubs and the Boston Bruins to teach young kids (mainly girls) how to play hockey, I volunteer when I can through CAP, I also volunteer through a local organization that supports veterans, and I’ll be volunteering with an animal shelter starting this week! I have 46 hours right now.
Test Scores/AP: No test scores yet, but I’m taking the SAT March 9th and a few later dates, and I’ll take the ACT in April, May, and June. I’m taking AP U.S. History, and most likely no AP’s next year, as none meet what I want to do, nor am I eligible. (My school runs AP classes weirdly).
Work: I’m a timekeeper/referee at two local ice arenas, an ice cream scooper, and occasionally a Zamboni driver. I used to be a summer camp counselor, but I didn’t like it very much. I’ll be working this summer, but not as much as I used to, as I’ll be away for CAP NCSAs and Encampment, along with Aim High.
CFA: Currently training for CFA, but my mile run time is a 7:15, 2 pull-ups (about 25s flexed arm hang), 85 sit-ups, 40 push-ups, and I haven’t tried the basketball throw or shuttle run yet. I’m still working, I’m a bit weak upper-body wise, but I’m determined to score as best I can!
Plans and Backups: I’ll be applying solely to USAFA for academies, but every other college I’ll apply to will have AFROTC. If all else fails, I’ll go to college to major in aerospace engineering and join the airlines.
Flaws/Setbacks: My vision is not great (-5.00 and -4.50), and I have some history with my mental health. I was diagnosed with anxiety and major depressive disorder back in 2020. Thankfully, I am off medication (went off in June 2023), and I will be ending therapy sometime in May/June, but I understand this will be a HUGE concern for the admissions team. My current condition is that I have generalized anxiety disorder (that rarely pops up), and major depressive disorder, MILD. I have a letter that proves clinical progress, along with therapist notes and various other physician notes. I’ll have to get a waiver if I have any hope for USAFA, but just wanted to see what y’all think about these setbacks.
Personally: I’m a kid who loves anything that flies (birds included), working, screwing around with technology, military history, swimming, running, playing with my dog. I like to have fun wherever and whenever I can!

You guys have been a great help so far in the forums I have published. If anybody has any suggestions on what to keep doing, start doing, or stop doing, please let me know! And if anyone has tips on how to train for the CFA (especially upper body), it’d be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Armstrong Pull-up Program on google. The website I use is down unfortunately but you can find the workout sheet on images.

The mental health issue will be a tall order to overcome, with very good reasons. Search this forum for anxiety, etc to get an idea of how others have approached it.

USAFA is designed as a pressure cooker, although not as bad as war, or in an airplane that is on fire.

DoDMERB also applies to ROTC when it is time to contract.

Your academics and athletics are right down the center, leadership could be better but within a normal range. Volunteer hours count for zero, outside of any leadership component.

Girls State this summer.

If you don't apply you have zero chance.

Best of luck!

I will put aside the medical issue as the vision and mental health issues may be tough to overcome and echo what @T-37IP says. Research how the candidate scoring process works and the associated weighting. Each academy is a little different but it is close to 60% academic, 30% Extracurricular/Leadership, and 10% CFA. It really is a quality over quantity discussion. Most of what you listed may fall in the 30% but hopefully you are the team Captain your last year to give you a boost there. Girls State is also very valuable in the scoring process. You do not have a test score to submit and that needs to be the top of your list. SAT/ACT scores are the single biggest impact to your application as they are weighted highest and can be changed with one test. You really cannot improve your class rank much with the few semesters you have left.

Love your pic of the F15 Tail fins!! It's from the base I retired from, 104th FW, there are 3 other cadets with ties to that base at the Academy right now, and one more from the same small city the base is located in. My ds is in the class of 27. If you have any questions, or anything I can help with, just send a private conversation to me. Best of luck to you!

Appreciate you all! I just looked into Girls State, it looks great! Hopefully the dates will work out with all of my other activities, if I get sponsored. SAT and ACT are at the top of my list, and I’ll post back to this thread what I get for the first round of testing. Thanks for all the advice!

Find your local American Legion Hall(s) - find out their monthly meeting date - get on their monthly agenda for an introduction!!! If your "other" activities" dates are athletic, personal vaca, etc... change those and go to Girls State! At Girls State run for a nominated position = leadership! In the eyes of the academies Girls State/Boys State adds points - HS club(s) are not viewed as "leadership" rolls .... Start to get "all" medical paperwork in order - good luck!

Correction: GIRLS State is NOT an American Legion program, it is run by the American Legion Auxiliary which is a different group that likely meets at a different time and day. I am a Post and County Coordinator for Boys State and have personally sent hundreds of boys to the program over the past 15 or so years. In all of that time, I've never experienced a young man appearing at one of our meetings for this purpose.
We work through the High Schools and some some cases with kids who call us to ask to be included. They would not get on the agenda at any
Legion Post meeting that I know of although they might get INVITED to our meeting AFTER Boys State.

The only SA admissions that I am familiar at all with is for USNA, but my advice is to show why you are unique. At least for USNA, it is not essential to have gone to Girls State or to be an athletic team captain. There are other Varsity leaders other than athletic, such as show choirs, band, etc. I believe they are looking for young people that are passionate and have spent years developing skills and experiences with these individual passions. To me, your experiences with girls hockey appear quite unique- what new leadership opportunities can you find in that field. How are you helping young girls develop confidence and skills in hockey? What makes you an awesome, unique person? And of course, prepare well for the ACT, SAT and work on your run, strength and your core. Good luck!
