I am in the process of asking my teachers for LORs. I am aware that USNA and USMA requires me to provide the e-mail addresses of my teachers, and then they will take care of it. However, I cannot figure out how USMMA handles LORs.

I have an e-mail draft that will be sent to my teachers with detailed instructions on how to go about writing the LORs. I do not want this to be a heavy burden for them.

Any information that can be provided is appreciated.

Thank you very much.

When our DS applied, as I remember, he had to have letter of recommendation from his guidance counselor, math and science teachers. These letters also went to the representative for review in the nomination process. Things may have changed, so it is always good to call admissions. They are extremely helpful! Good luck on your application.

My only issue is knowing what forms to provide to my teachers. As mentioned, I want to make this easy for them.

I believe USNA and USMA will provide them with the forms once I give them my teachers e-mails. But I do not know how to provide my teachers with the forms for USMMA. Must I request them from the admissions office? Is it the regular LOR form that I can find at my high school?

DS had specific Letters of Recommendation used at the High School. I think those were used, and he gave teachers self addressed stamped envelope to mail to the Academy and Representative office. Also it is helpful to give teachers additional information on what other service or organizations you belong to that they might not be aware of, such as Eagle Scout or Church Activities. Make sure to get everything in by the deadlines. Things do change in two years. The United States Merchant Marine Academy Catalog contains a lot of very useful information. Again you may want to contact Admissions and ask about the LOR and receive a Catalog, if you haven't gotten one yet.

From my standpoint of a teacher, it is very helpful & makes you look organized & effective to provide a resume to all teachers that you are asking LOR's from. List all academic awards/competitions; athletics inc. awards/& above school rankings ie regional; all clubs; church; scouts inc. leadership positions & awards, major projects etc. Community service by organiztion & hours/year. i've even seen ACT/SAT scores if impressive. They are looking for high school years although you may cite earlier years if you joined an organization ie scouts -10 years. They aren't interested in awards less than 9th gr. I know my word choice changes when I view my student through their whole picture. A resume is also really helpful to you when you are filling out those pages of applications for your plan A,B,C,D ie ROTC. Best of Luck- a resume is worth the time it takes to write.
