Are you 'locked in' to your major? Can you change prior to entry if you are accepted? Also can you change after? DS looking at a similar major to one he put on app. It actually has almost identical curriculum for year one.

I read within a thread on this site that CGA will usually accomadate a change AFTER 4/c year, as long it is within the same discipline. I personally know of 2 Cadets that did indeed switch Majors at that time.

Yes my understanding is that for 4c year everyone takes the same courses, there is no difference between majors. You are allowed to change at the end of your 4c year as in 3c your major specific course work will start.

sanman is mostly correct in what he is saying however there have been changes to the curriculum. Cadets may take a few different classes in 4C year that pertain to their major. For example not every major takes Calc 1 and 2. Also cadets are not guaranteed to change their major. It depends on the needs of the Coast Guard and their academic performance.

Thank you. So your declared major is based on what's in the application and you can't change until after year 4/c? It's important for applicants to understand the certainty of what you put in the application.

Occasionally if Cadet has tested well in certain areas during the 4C year they can get recommend to change majors, I believe the terminology that is used is. “Volen-told, needs of the Cost Guard....

.

Your declared major is more or less what you're locked into until at least some time during if not after 4/c year. I was a declared Mechanical, but switched to NavArch for a number of reasons in October of 4/c year. I believe they've since changed the system. Based on your talk of similar curriculum, I am guessing these could be the majors OP speaks of. If so, a change is virtually guaranteed, as are most either within Mac Hall (engineering) or from outside of Mac hall to Mac hall. Where people usually run into problems with change of major is from within Mac to outside of Mac.

In response to what Hollyrock said, I'm not going to say that nobody has ever been forced into a particular major... But I have never ever heard of it happening.

Thank you and yes you are correct. DS declared xxx engineering and wants to change to another engineering. It seems like an easy switch but wasn't sure if it was allowed. Now it sound likely. Appreciate the response.

I do not know if he can change now. I recommend contacting his AO.

Once enrolled, the timing to be offered the opportunity to request a change of major can vary greatly. This year, 4c will have the opportunity during the spring semester. CGA now receives direction from above about the mix of majors that are needed. As a result, the likelyhood of moving depends greatly on the make up of the entering class.

There is no longer a common 4c year, though all engineers and the cyber major have a common 4c year. That said, there is usually a path to other majors with summer school.

If you are a non engineer, you can request to take the engineering common 4c year through your advisor. They will reach out to an engineering advisor for consultation.
