My ultimate goal is to fly as a pilot for the military. While my first choice was and currently is Marine Engineering as my major, I've done a lot of self-reflection and, as one who loves to learn new things, would be equally happy to major in Marine Transportation. Regarding these, is there a benefit to majoring in engineering over transportation for my application for a pilot slot, or is GPA the primary focus? And if so, what major has the overall higher GPA? Thank you so much.

The surest way to a high GPA is to go Marine Transportation

GPA is not the primary focus to get a pilot slot. My DS had offers for both Navy and Marine Corps pilot slots and he was in the middle third of his class. Major in what you are interested in rather than choose depending on how you think someone else will evaluate your choice. Your first trimester will include survey courses that give you a glimpse into engine versus deck majors.

It is great your desire to fulfill your obligation through active duty service.

Just make sure you know your audience when you are out of the merchant ships when they ask you what you want to do after graduation...telling them you don't want to be a merchant sailor might not go over to well politically with them and affect your interactions.

Your major choice may be dependent on where you are headed. In the Class of 2022's Commencement Ceremonies, nine midshipmen took the Oath of Office and went from midshipmen to 2nd Lt in the United States Air Force. The oath was administered by Capt Jordan Robertson, USAF. Congratulations, "Aim High … Fly-Fight-Win!" Like and Share!

So ask yourself a question, do you think these nine individuals were deck or engine?
