Can a candidate be rejected from their preferred major(s) but still receive an appointment from USNA?

If you haven’t yet read every page, drop down and link on USNA.edu, I strongly recommend it. Most answers are there. As the previous poster notes, midshipmen choose majors once they are there. The general academic path is discussed on USNA.edu.

This link is older - but all classes get briefings on majors.

Thank you that was very helpful.

FWIW, I have no experience on the admission review board.

The desired major is asked at the BGO interview and I expect they all include the response in the BGO Eval.

My son wasn’t asked about major.

I think the MOC committee interviews might have asked about it.

Most BGOs ask about majors. It’s more general than a specific major... more like candidate is interested in Engineering. It’s very broad. BGOs generally discuss this to ensure candidates know USNA doesn’t have 60 majors, understand what is offered, and that it’s STEM focused. If candidates have questions we try to answer them as best we can.

Just to add to some of what was said above. Your choice of major has no impact on your chance of receiving an appointment. In fact, you don’t even pick your major until March of your Plebe year. Midshipmen are free to pick whatever major they want as long as 2/3 of the class chooses a STEM major. Almost always, over 2/3 of the class chooses STEM. Therefore, the likelihood of you getting your first major choice is almost 100%

Your major is determined only after Spring Break in Plebe year after you submit your official choice. Getting an Appointment is based on your competitiveness in your district going head to head with the best WCS. In 2017 Application USNA did ask what major you wish to consider. They said it has no baring on your App but the data is used by the Academy to consider when building a class. So I believe it does have some indirect baring on your Appointment since they don’t want too many Aerospace and too little History majors. There were 2 Options. So DS put Aerospace #1, History #2. As a Plebe, he is now declaring something very different. So it doesn’t matter after you enroll but it probably has some impact when the Admissions is building a class. Your major also doesn’t matter when you commission. You can be an English Major and still go to Sub or Aviation. All MIDNs get plenty of Engineering STEM, at least 90 credits, and all are qualified in any line as long as you rank well within the pool and you’re not put into restricted line duty due to some extenuating reasons.
