If offered an appointment to USMA, I want to major in management. I've taken a 4-year entrepreneurship/management pathway in high school and am currently enrolled in an online college business law course, along with the rest of my class, and I'm really loving it. Does anyone know of anything regarding internship opportunities or rigors of the management course?

Management is a good major at USMA, but is not considered one of the more academically difficult majors USMA offers. However, the rigorous core curriculum makes up for what some might consider "softness" in the Management major.

Management at USMA is somewhat different than what may be found at other Universities with business programs. The USMA program is very strong in Leadership studies and does offer courses in Marketing, Finance, and Operations, but those offerings are less extensive than found in other colleges. This is largely due to the number of credits taken up for the core curriculum. The Redbook can be found on the USMA website and contains all courses offered for every major.

Internship opportunities are readily available, just as they are in all majors - Fortune 500 companies, Wall Street, Non-Profit Organizations, etc. A big difference between a USMA internship and a normal college internship is the duration. Rather than a whole summer, a USMA internship is scheduled around military training. Therefore, the internships are normally about 3 - 4 weeks.

I was a management major back in my day at USMA. I took systems engineering for my engineering track. Good major. Had an internship at the Pentagon. Worked out at the MOPAC (that's what the gym used to be called if I remember correctly) and noticed after my shower that the uniforms in the lockers all around me had 3 and 4 stars on them, but when they saw my uniform they were all talking to me. Was pretty funny. As far as less academically difficult (that is definitely the case), I wouldn't worry about that as now all those people with the technical degrees report to me! Bottom line... study what interests you and you'll do well.

LOOK AT THE WEBSITE. All of the possible majors at USMA are explained in painstaking detail on the website.

As JL123 said, there are a lot of AIADs. I looked through all of them on West Point's internal page for cadets and there is a bunch of different ones that deal with business firms, wall street, and other financial institutions such as JP Morgan.

Cadets do not compete for the internships with students from other colleges. USMA academic departments secure the internships and then select cadets by three general criteria:
  1. Meeting prerequisite coursework
  2. Performance - GPA, Grades in relevant courses, etc
  3. Number of internships already completed - priority to those who have not yet had an internship

I'm interested as well!

I'm a Yuk Business Management double major right now and can answer any specific questions you have regarding it. I'm currently in the introductory marketing class and absolutely love it.

What else are you majoring in? Which focus did you take? How heavily is your major emphasized plebe year vs during your current year? How large is the class? What is your favorite part/project you have worked on in your management major? If there was something you wish you had known plebe year about management, what would it be?

apologies for the bombardment of questions 😅

I'm also taking a language major. There really hasn't been a particular track in Management to take. I guess General Management. I've already taken Intro to Management, I'm in Marketing now, and I believe I'm taking Human Resources next. My major for my language began second semester plebe year, but typically no one takes a major class plebe year. Each business class I've been in has about 16 people. Right now, we're working on a project with a few of the local businesses to expand and improve their marketing. So far, it's my favorite because I feel like we're actually making a difference with the things we learn.
