March 8th, 2011 AROTC Board

WOW so similar, first DD off working on PhD, DS going off this year with ROTC and DD remaining will be a junior in HS next year. Not only will it be quiet but entire schedule changes as DS's activities dictated schedule for the last 7 years. I'm hoping there is still some hockey watching left as I'm saving vacation for next fall and winter to watch college hockey.
DS is my last to leave the nest. I am so NOT looking forward to it. School play this week and yes I will be at all 3 performances..(funny he plays a Marine Lt...told him his hair wasn't short enough:biggrin:)..Baseball scrimmages are over an hour away this week and yes I'm going. Just got back from HS to drop off sub for DS dinner during that 30 minutes of free time in between commitments. I'm sure this is not uncommon considering the company I'm in here. BUSY! Just wondering what I will do with my evenings this fall. I need a plan. Ohh that's right, never mind I will be the overtime queen because he is going OOS to college:yllol: Slim chance of 4 year scholarship for a specific school OOS especially in March. But the stars may align. Ya never know:smile:

Okay, one thing to remember, we all ended up parents because....MARRIAGE...hope I'm not assuming too much here. But DH and I are looking forward to that part of the kiddos moving on a little. DD will be home next year, but she's not really home much(color guard practice 15+ hrs week plus competitions/football games on weekend). So, we actually can have some quality time just us again. Yes, we'll watch her perform, go see the two college kids once in awhile, but we started our family young and hope to have some good times yet ahead:smile: Isn't 40 something the new thirty something????:shake:

So what if you've only stayed married because neither one of you wanted sole custody of the kids?? :yllol: KIDDING!!

For better or worse, DS's little brother is only a 7th grader...Oh the joy of getting to do everything all over again. He won't do the military thing, but I'm sure the ride will be wild never-the-less!

Costs with Questions

Honestly, with as much as the little darlings cost, that could happen:yllol:

Here's a question as we wait. Phone rings just now, caller asks if DS will be going to senior graduation party. Answer, "No." Response, "OOOOOhhhh, thanks, that's all I needed."

Does anyone else think that $100 dollars for an 8 hour party is a bit pricey? I'm still a bit mystified why these parties are so common and expected. Why do we pay someone to kidnap our kids? Why are we spending so much money on a group of graduating seniors? Thoughts?

I never went to a pricey party when I was in HS. I still graduated.

One answer is that a $100 fee to keep kids in a controlled and safe environment (no drinking) on graduation night is worth the peace of mind for many parents. It's not relevant for all kids/parents but I know several parents and schools that look at it from that perspective.

USMA QNS - AROTC Chances

My son received his letter of regret from USMA today, he was fully qualified and nominated, just didn't make the cut in this very competitive year. Rough day. Is there any truth to the rumor that fully qualified and not selected academy candidates get special consideration for AROTC Scholarship?

We live near NAS Patuxent River and each year the graduates from all four local high schools (3 public and 1 paraochial) are treated to an all-night party at the Drill Hall on NAS Pax River the night of their graduation ("Project Grad"). They each can bring one guest and are transported from the school to the drill hall in buses and back to school in the morning. They get to bowl, swim, play basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, and softball, watch movies, etc. They have even brought in a mechanical bull, velcro wall, and that game where two people are in a ring with those large soft q-tip thingies and see who gets beat down first. They feed them all kinds of food and snacks (including a make-your-own sundae bar!) all night and then breakfast before they go home in the morning. This "party" is put on for 4 nights in a row. It is funded by the States Attorney’s Office in partnership with the MD State Police, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, NAS Patuxent River, Patuxent River Department of Defense Police, local rescue squads and several Optimist Clubs. All those in attendance commit to remaining alcohol- and chemical-free for the evening. This has been going on for many years and the kids LOVE it! So do us parents!

Got an email from an ROO that said the March boards offers will be coming out around April 8th. If this turns out to be incorrect remember...don't shoot the messenger! Just felt any info is better than no info.

I heard the same thing when I called CC. Results of the 8 MAR 11 board are expected to come out 8 APR 11. Good luck to all!:yllol:

FloridaDad, today's the day

I'm thinking this is your day, 3/29, wish it were so; however it looks like the word on the street is more waiting.

Emailed my ROO at my #1 school. He said that the results are scheduled to be released in mid-April. Just thought that everybody would want to know this information. Looks like we're gonna be waiting a little longer:rolleyes:...Good luck everbody!

Too lazy to look back, but I think I had the 7th as my pick. Anything before 4/15 is a gift. The government shut down will probably not mess up the results, but transfers could be a huge issue. Wish they'd get it done earlier, but I can still work with the 8th. Prayers we are all waiting for good news:thumb:

oh, we don't shoot messengers around here, do we?

So does that mean thats the day we personally find out? Or is it the day they send out the results?

I've been reading threads from all over the forum. Seeing the AFROTC EA slots announced, the SAs seem to be mailing out their BFE/TWE envelopes and NROTC updating their websites....the good news and bad news is awe inspiring. So many lives being changed with one decision that is the culmination of a lot of little decisions and plans over weeks, months and years of these young peoples lives. Not to mention us parents.

DS is off having fun - like a high school senior should on spring break - I'm sitting here terrified of the AROTC board results due out oh, whenever next couple of weeks. He has amazing opportunities in front of him either way, but hearing the heartache in the posts of those not getting good news lately, makes my own heart hurt for them and potentially my own DS. It will be what it is supposed to be, but I'd sell a limb or something else precious to me for him to see the "you may check your medical status...." AROTC portal update when it happens. NOT knowing is almost better than knowing its a no.

Thanks for letting me vent a little. Congradulations to any who read this who have received their great news. To those who didn't - don't take no for the final answer, chase the dream - your path may just be a little different.
