Hi
What are the opportunities for shooting or marksmanship clubs or sports? My DS enjoys this and I could not find anything about it.
Regards
John

There has to be something. If you took a look in the catalogue, there might be something. But Jack's Valley does have marksmanship training.

There is a basic qualification course during BCT. I'd consider it an introduction, because there is a low round count, and the standards are easy (unless they've changed). After basic, there is the NCAA rifle team, if you are already pretty good. The Combat Shooting Team also does quite a bit of marksmanship work. They are on a competitive-tryout system that includes more than just pure marksmanship.

Regarding shooting opportunities there is a combat shooting team. My son is a junior and has been on the team for 2 years. They typically shoot 2 times during the week and on Saturday. It is an 8-10 hourt commitment per week. The team has approximately 20 members who go through try outs and a selection committee. If your son has shooting experience and is serious about pursuing it further he should look into it. Selection usually begins late August or early September. They work alot with pistols (9mm in particular) and some rifle. The officers in charge have been highly trained and offer alot of handson training during the first semester of each year. Also, it is a way to connect with other cadets who are into shooting. I know many of them have their own guns stored off campus and go out shooting in the area. My son enjoys the team alot.

Do you happen to know the next opportunity where we can try again to qualify for Expert?

When my son went on Deployed Ops between 2 deg. and Firstie year he had to go through another rifle qualification training and he was able to get his Expert ribbon at that time.

It depends on a few things. Outside of any extra opportunities the academy provides, it is dependent on your AFSC.

The only time I've officially qualified was during BCT (which annoys me significantly). I joined the Combat Shooting Team largely because I felt I ought to be good at shooting as a military member. I half-jokingly say the AF doesn't like any gun under 20mm...but I think that is seriously true of a large portion of the AF.
