I have a good friend/college classmate who is a Chinese national but attending an American college. He's been very interested in becoming a U.S. citizen for various reasons, and since he's always had an affinity to anything military, we decided to talk to a local recruiter to see if there was any way for him to enlist in the U.S. military.

Surprisingly the recruiter (Army) mentioned the "MAVNI program" and stated that he qualifies since his language is one of the specialties specified by the program.

But I was wondering if anyone could help explain how the program actually worked (we're not sure about everything the recruiter said) since I wanted to get as much information for my friend. One of the biggest questions/fears he had was what exactly would he potentially do?

A linguist? if so then what should he expect?
Or could he choose a career etc.?

    Thanks
