Throwing this out there to see if anyone else is in the same situation and/or can put my mind at ease. DS completed 100% of his application in late October, but his name was never submitted to DODMERB. The Admissions Briefing video states that names are sent to DODMERB when 50% of application is complete, but that never happened. Three separate communications with Admissions produced 3 separate (and in 2 cases contradictory) explanations that didn’t really explain why it hasn’t been sent.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is there any reason to draw negative conclusions from the fact that it hasn’t been sent yet?

Thanks in advance!

DS = send me an email: lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil; provide complete name and last 4 SSN; past Parent posting to your email; I'll answer late tonight :wiggle:

Thank you Mr. Mullen. I was going to suggest that he send you a message, but figured that sending the name was a USNA thing and wanted to see if our situation was unusual before he did so. I’ll suggest he send you something tonight.

DS has a 100% complete application except for his medical examination (still pending USNA Admissions submitting the request to DoDMERB so he can get the appt scheduled (I guess)). He was recently instructed by two different admissions counselors, via email, that because of changes this year that once his application is reviewed and considered competitive by the admissions board THEN they will request DoDMERB. They were unable to provide any timeline on when this might occur.

It's our impression that his application is competitive (exceptional CFA, 33 math/35 English ACT, 4.0 UW GPA w/ spectrum of AP classes/#1 rank, Track / Cross Country Varsity Athlete/Captain, Eagle Scout, other ECA and volunteer experience, exceptional math and English evals, double noms (SEN, MoC), and DS was under the impression that his BGO interview went very well).

We are just patiently waiting at this point... Hopefully something in the hurry up and wait will move sooner than later.

03USMC13- Thanks for the response. Our situations sound very similar, so at least I can take comfort knowing my DS is not the only one in this situation. I’d have to agree that your DS appears to be “competitive” by any standard. I thought that applicants had to be deemed “competitive” in order to reach candidate status.

I thought that applicants had to be deemed “competitive” in order to reach candidate status.
USNA did not do the normal prescreen to determine whether an applicant met the minimum threshold to qualify as an Official Candidate and receive an Candidate ID this year. I don't recall whether this was because of difficulties with the launch of the Application platform or COVID (probably a little of both - the platform launch was delayed and it was recognized that many Candidates didn't have ACT/SAT scores yet). The result is that anyone who submitted the preliminary application was an Official Candidate was given access to submit the full application. It remains to be seen whether this will continue going forward.

All that said, being granted Official Candidate status does not necessarily equate to being "competitive." It was a minimal threshold, and nobody really knows what that threshold is. The minimum threshold is not really relevant, as your chances for being competitive for admission were much greater if you are well above that line.
