Hi everyone, I think I've got tonsillitis right now and I get sore throats and strep throat significantly more often than the average person (many cases a year). I'm considering talking to my doctor about getting a tonsillectomy. Does anyone know if this is medically disqualifying, even though it's really common?

can you wait and let the SA if you get appointed deal with it?

I sure wouldn’t advise that:

- As a plebe you have a very high likelihood of getting sick as is (plebe hack), and if you have a propensity for strep/tonsillitis, wouldn’t be surprised if it morphed into that. Which would be AWFUL. Trying to mange plebe summer is hard enough healthy.

- During the AC year, you have a very high likelihood of getting sick as is (DS had mono. Then influenza). Trying to mange plebe year is hard enough as is.

I wouldn’t set yourself up for failure. As a mom, I would want to see a DR about getting tonsils removed ASAP (another reason to not wait...as a new plebe ESPECIALLY I would think you would want to convalesce at you home. Not a stranger sponsor families home). Knowing what my own super healthy varsity athlete son went through, I would highly dissuade ‘waiting and letting USNA deal with it’. In fact, if it’s something you know is problematic and will arise, I would wonder how you can even do that. You need to report to Iday healthy and ready to go (another reason....what if you get strep for reporting day). They can (it’s happened) turn you away.

Curious if this is something you disclosed on DODMERB?

I went to the doctor again and got blood drawn to find out it's mono. My best friend was diagnosed two weeks ago who I regularly share food/drinks with so, go figure. Thankfully it seems like I'm on the tail end of it. Also good because it's not going to medically disqualify me in any way. I'm sure I'll get sick over plebe summer (that is, if I receive an appointment, which would be SO awesome) because everyone gets sick, but I'll just hope it's something manageable. Thank you for your insight!

Oh wow, my son had that and it’s exhausting. At least you probably won’t get it at USNA (it’s another common ailment).

Wishing you fast healing!!

I've heard horror stories of people getting it over plebe summer too, so I'm definitely grateful I'm not one of those...
