So I was medically disqualified back in early-October for a patella dislocation, and right after that occurred I received a PDF letter from West Point stating that they only reserve medical waivers for a very small percentage of their incoming class. After a few weeks passed by, however, they sent another letter saying that they approved my medical waiver and that I had my 3Q. So, I was just wondering if getting a waiver granted is generally a good sign from an admissions standpoint?

Others on this forum can confirm, but my understanding for USMA is the same for USAFA, they only consider candidates for waivers if they are qualified in other areas/under consideration for an appointment. Put another way, why would USMA spend time reviewing a medical DQ if the rest of the candidate's application doesn't meet standards. Sometimes a candidate will think they didn't get in because of a DQ, but then a waiver review was never requested. In reality, there was likely something else about their application that was lacking, the medical DQ was a moot point.

When our DS received a request for waiver review and then was granted a waiver, we took it as a good sign. He's now at USAFA. Celebrate the good news, knowing that they are looking at your file and you are still in the running! Good luck!

There are 4 requirements to get and appointment into WP:
1. be selected by Admissions. That obviously occurred, which is why they requested a medical waiver
2. receive a Nom
3. Pass the CFA
4. be medically qualified by DoDMERB or medically waived by WP.

Those do NOT guarantee an appointment, but it definitely puts you in the competitive pool. :wiggle:

The medical waiver simply means you jumped through another hurdle. If you didnt get the waiver, you would not be able to get an appointment. So for admissions standpoint it means that that roadblock is simply cleared.

That's a super quick turnaround on your waiver approval. Congrats!
