Medical Waiver Question

My daughter will be taking her medical exam in the next few weeks. We are assuming she will need a waiver because she was diagnosed with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) a couple of years ago. This is basically a disorder where you have low blood pressure. Since she started medication (fludrocortisone) last year, she hasn't had any issues. She is an elite runner, so she is in fantastic shape. I'm wondering if there is a chance at all of her being granted a waiver.

Very difficult to say. Good news is that you are in the 'process.' I suggest that you prepare for the additional medical information (AMI) that may be requested by DoDMERB, including doctors' statements around her health, condition, etc. Also, I assume your daughter has lined up a Plan B and C in case she is found to be medically disqualified. I have a student this year that has an eyesight condition (so clearly it is unrelated), but we anticipated needing AMI and a medical waiver. Neither was needed, and she is fully qualified for an appointment. I hope the same for you daughter!

Also, I assume you have reviewed the following DoD Instruction: https://www.esd.whs.mil/Portals/54/Documents/DD/issuances/dodi/613003_vol1.PDF

You may find it helpful.

As of today, she is in the waiver process.
Not a MD, not part of DoDMERB

I would suggest you and your DD do some research on any limits a waiver might put on her career choices down the road.

Again, I have no idea, but it's possible her USAF/USSF career options might be limited even with a waiver (which she might be fine with accepting)

Good luck with the waiver and her pursuit of an appointment.
