I’m deciding between mercersburg and kiski for foundation. Which one has more foundation kids? I just want ppl in the same program as me so I don’t feel alone

Very few at both. Last year there were 3 at Kiski and 2 at Mercersburg per the Alumni Association. If you are looking for #'s the most popular options are Marion, Northwestern and Georgia Military College (in no particular order)

Hey Mols - curious what has drawn you to these two schools? I’d love to know, I don’t know anything about them. Thanks!

I am foundation prep at GMC. The schools that usually have the most foundation students are GMC and MMI because they both have a corps of cadets.

My son was a self-prep at MMI, and now a Plebe at WP. 15 classmates from MMI joined him at RDAY last June. (Both sponsored and other self-preps). They have been an incredibly strong support system for each other, and he is grateful that he did not gain appointment to USMA before going to Marion.

My thinking was I'll get plenty of military for the next 4-9 years so I just wanted to focus 100% on my studies and getting better at my weaker subjects. Also, they're great programs and they're some of the top schools in the country for education

I'm interested in why those 2 programs. Check out New Mexico Military Institue (NMMI) if you have time. This year we have 21 preps. Tight knit group.

... ---> my $0.02 cents.
Attend Mercersburg.
1. First class academics.
2. Casual clothes. Don't go grunge just because you can out of respect to USNA Foundation.
3. Attend a Navy Football game in Annapolis.
4. Captain Wallace will visit you... can be a good thing if your grades are up to par (As and Bs); opposite is true.
5. Cafeteria setup is same as King Hall. Grab your dinner and eat in your room while doing homework.
6. Work on swimming after school with the swim coach in preparation for USNA Swim test after Plebe summer.
7. Serene area like Downton Abbey.
8. Glimpse on the "other" side. NBA phenoms rehabbing grades for Division 1. Classmates with private jets.
9. Lifelong friends.
10. Friendly atmosphere.

Thanks for the advice! I didn’t know captain Hughes visits the foundation students. Do the swimming instructors always help foundationers? I’m a good swimmer, but could use a bit of work. I wonder if they have strength and conditioning coaches. That would help me a lot lol. Hopefully some other foundation kids go to mercersburg so I don’t end up alone

I guess my viewing of it is just that I’ll get enough military in the upcoming years. Also, I just want to dedicate all my time to my studies. Bc I don’t want to do badly

... yes, Captain Hughes and his assistant will visit you. They are wired to the faculty, business office, and college counseling. To
avoid his wrath and of USNA Admissions, do not, I say again, do not make a C. The first day, talk to your counselor and teachers. You have to be brutally honest with these folks.
--- "Sir/Ma'am: I'm a USNA Foundation Scholarship recipient and I need your help. I'm expected (or I have a standing order) to make all As and Bs. I'm willing to do extra work to maintain it. A C grade risks of not attending the Naval Academy." ---
With swimming staff helping you, tell them the same way. I always think that if you can't swim 9 miles, then you need extra lessons. Good Luck... and let us know around 1st September how you are doing. You should already be settled in your dorm room.

Sidebar: Five or more but less than 13 Foundation students will enroll.

Thanks for the help-I will for sure take this into account. Captain Hughes told me that if I were to get a C, the teacher would have to write him why that was. So it’s best if I avoid that. That’s good that a bunch of foundation students go there. That’ll make me feel great about going there.

No matter which you choose, you will be in very good company. The Alumni Association and Foundation publishes an annual newsletter with a few pages containing the bios of the recipients of the Foundation scholarships for the prior year (USNA Class of 2027). They are all very impressive so that speaks volumes about you given you are now amongst their ranks. Congratulations, make the most of it, and you'll be at I-Day before you know it.
