Just FYI, the December 2010 issue of Proceedings magazine, the professional naval journal published by the U. S. Naval Institute, is their annual "Merchant Marine" issue. I just got mine, and found numerous articles that might be of interest to USMMA cadets and parents. I'm not positive, but you may be able to read the magazine online at the Institute's website, www.usni.org.

Paortions of it are available online for free to non-members including:

A nice article on the Somali Pirates by USMMA Class of 1979 grad Mr. Stephen Carmel an SVP with Maersk Lines Limited.

There's also an great article by the current USMMA Dean which really gives a nice overview and details as to why I frequently remind people that the USMMA's primary purpose - providing leaders for the maritime industry and indeed sea-going mariners and that it is a very necessary and important mission that is essential for the on-going health of our Nation's economy.

It also may provide an understanding as to why I also point out that while any current struggles new graduates might be having getting sea-going employment are temporary and if they work through these lean times they will likely be richly rewarded, at the very least in an economic sense.

I'm fairly sure it is not sold in stores. Your best bet is to ask around and see if you can find a member to give you theirs - best bet would be current or retired officers of the sea services. Might also call USNI and see if they have them available by the copy. Maybe your cadet would enjoy a gift membership for Christmas? Good luck

The U.S. Naval Institute is a non-governmental organization serving the Navy's publishing needs. They print books for the service, some of which are issued at Kings Point, and have two monthly publications - PROCEEDINGS and NAVAL HISTORY.

PROCEEDINGS is the "end all, be all" for what's happening in the US Navy from a professional development perspective. You'll find a copy in every wardroom and every ready room throughout the fleet.

I'd bet most naval officers are members of the organization. And - they offer a deep discount on membership to Midshipmen. I highly recommend this as a gift to any Midshipmen who wants to join the Navy or Marine Corps upon graduation.

Here is a link to their website:

You can buy hard copies of their magazines there but I don't think you can read the articles unless you are a member and log in.
