How are cadets chosen for summer MIADs? Who makes the final decision and on what criteria are they chosen. If you're not chosen for one do you have the opportunity the following summer???

The deal with summer schedules and opportunities, is that there are a lot of different opportunities and a key element is to be flexible as schools and AIADs pop up and vanish.

1. It is based off of your military and physical GPAs and TAC discretion. You can submit preferences but they are rarely honored.
2. TAC officers, based off of the above.
3. Yes. You must do an AIAD or a MIAD to graduate, so you will get one eventually.
"military and physical GPAs", what does that mean/include? How about academic GPA?

From what I understand, your GPA is based not solely only on your academics but also on your military and physical abilities. I don't know if they make selections based on specific sections of the GPA or the overall but I'm sure this will all be explained when you arrive.

GPA = Grade Point Average and reflects your academic standing. OML (Order of Merit List) indicates your overall class rank comprising academic, military, and physical standing. Depending on what you are being evaluated for (grad school or branch, say), one may weigh more heavily than the other. Generally speaking, at USMA, OML (the whole package) is what counts although “talent/aptitude” is now being considered along with OML for branching.

Your total GPA is calculated with 55% academics, 35% military, and 10% physical (I might add that this is also the formula for admissions subbing leadership for military). Military includes grades from your military science classes, summer details, and military grades in your roles as a cadet. Physical is DPE classes and the IOCT.

MIADs are calculated based off of an OML with just physical and military GPAs. Academics do not matter for MIAD selection.

And to speak on the last comment, talent-based branching MUCH favors aptitude over OML. GPA is still a consideration for more technical branches, but under the new system a passionate cadet in the class rank 900s can get Aviation while under the old system you would've had to have been in the 300s or above. Grad school, obviously yes academics are critical.

Appreciate your thoughts and input.
