Military service academies plan for students’ return in fall

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The U.S. Naval Academy is planning to have its 4,400 midshipmen return to campus in Annapolis, Maryland, for the fall, after students completed the last semester with online learning from their homes around the nation due to the coronavirus, academy officials said Monday.

Vice Adm. Sean Buck, the superintendent, told the academy’s Board of Visitors he has been communicating with the leaders of the nation’s other service academies, and they also plan to have their students on campus in the fall.

“I can tell you, as of this morning, every single military service academy in this country is opening in the fall,” Buck told the board in an online meeting. “We all are developing very detailed plans with regards to health, safety and the protocols that we need to put in place to manage risk.”.......continued

Good news.... it needs to be done, but I feel bad for the Midshipmen ! It is likely they will have some form of ROM when they return, then be confined to the Yard until safe to get out and about. My wife dubbed USNA "the jail school" back when were dating, and now it really will be ! I'm sure the fry for going over the wall will be enhanced when there is a General Order from the Supe backing up MidnRegs.

at the same time, it's looking possible that the Notre Dame game, which was cancelled for Ireland, might now be played in Annapolis

it's not clear even if they can pull it off, and if so, whether there will be fans in the seats. maybe a partially filled stadium

that would be a bummer if Notre Dame comes to Annapolis for the first time, and the mids can't leave the yard.....

my guess is that if they can't have the mids and all the festivities, then they won't bother having the game at all, but who knows

Practical POV here:

How many players are suited up for Navy on game days? Is it 70+ ?

Social distancing doesn’t work in a team contact sport. Social distancing can work in individual sports where the opposing combatants don’t touch — e.g. Motor racing and Cycling, Golf, etc. .... 4-wheel and 2-wheel motor racing has already resumed. I know, because I love the 2-wheel kind and I am depressed when I go this long without the Fix.

If they allow FB and other contact sports this year, it is not possible to prevent a contagion like Covid from being transported into the Yard.
