This is a forum for parents of students entering the SAP program at MMI this Fall. My DS is attending this fall as a West Point AOG-sponsored cadet. Look forward to meeting and hearing from other parents.

We just completed the April 5 open-house/preview day. The faculty and staff were very friendly. The school is small but well-maintained. It seems like a small, supportive community for students. My DS seemed very comfortable there, and that was such a relief/blessing. FWIW, I heard from the students that they had 20 students gain USMA appointments this year with 11 of them being sponsored and 9 being self-prep. As of now, the total count for all service academy appointments for this year was around 30.

Two notes on visiting. First, we stayed at the Sleep Inn in Marion. It was close but pretty run down. I spoke to another parent who stayed at a Hampton Inn in Selma. Selma is about 20 minutes from campus, but it seems as though it would be worth the drive. Second, I highly recommend a visit to a small diner about a quarter mile from campus called Dianne's. It's diner that is typical of the kind you find in a small, southern town. It has just a few tables, a group of regulars (especially at breakfast), and a straight-down the middle menu. My son got the double burger. It was less than $9 and the portions were enormous. He couldn't finish the burger, and he's a big eater. The staff were really nice. Chances are that your student will be spending some time there, so it's worth getting to know these people.

Glad you enjoyed the Open House/Preview Day. Don't forget The Shack! The food is good and very reasonably priced. I'm not sure on the total number of students who received appointments, but I know there are only 6 AOG sponsored cadets. There were 7 but 1 dropped out of the program last fall. No matter what, the number of appointments sponsored or self prep is impressive.

Many people also stay in Tuscaloosa or Birmingham, and don't mind the drive.

We've been really pleased with the entire experiencer DS has had at MMI. Would definitely recommend it to anyone!

When we went last August, we stayed in Tuscaloosa. It's a short drive, about 40-45 minutes down to Marion. I'll be interested to know the total number of appointments this year. The program works as long as your youngins work the program. For anyone looking at this thread, it all hinges on your DS/DD. Any questions, ask away. Good luck future MMI'ers!

Thank you for the correct number on appointments. As you said, it’s an impressive number either way.

Our son will be attending the SAP at MMI in the fall as well! He's been recruited to throw javelin for the Track team. We are very happy he has been given this opportunity and look forward connecting with you all!

Our son is scheduled to attend MMI in the fall for SAP if Academies dont offer him an appointment. Currently, he has been waitlisted for Naval and still waiting to hear from USAFA.

Fingers crossed for your son. If he doesn't get an appointment this year, we hope to see you in the fall at MMI.

I've been doing a little research. It looks like there are a few restaurants in the area around MMI:
Diane's Diner, The Shack, Lottie's, The Social, Whillard's BBQ, The Crab Box and Chatinos Mexican Grill. I also see that there are two gas stations (Valero & Citgo). I'm thinking it might be nice to get some gift cards/certificates to some of the restaurants (while we are down there for report-in day) that my son can use during the year. Do they get time to spend off campus or would this be a waste of money?

Yes, they do get to go off campus, especially after the initial training cycle is completed. Gift cards or accounts at local businesses are always a good idea and are greatly appreciated!

Are there any spots in particular that the kids like to frequent? I appreciate your insight, thank you!
