Much depends on when the MOC staff submits their slate to their SA portal. It may not be concurrent with when they notify nominees. In everyone's experience, how long does it usually take for the nominations to post to the USAFA portal?
Not sure I understand how a medical waiver process intersects with the nomination process, regardless of source, but I wish you luck.We have a medical waiver pending on the nomination - so that is why we are wondering.
Ah, thank you for sharing. Admissions can initiate the waiver process anytime they want for competitive candidates. They are probably now at that point in the cycle where they decide whether to move forward on someone who they think may be competitive but doesn’t have a nom in hand yet, before they initiate a waiver. This also tells you they are managing the nom sources they control very closely. We were told by admissions that the waiver process cannot start until the nomination has been received.
Advanced reading, all about nom sources and numbers, at link below. The SAs have nom sources that candidates do not apply for. They are not limitless, and are closely managed. When you say the nomination sources that they control - what are you referring to?
Look at the Non-Congressional Table.Thank you for posting. This is what I see in the document "Other nomination and appointment sources are only available to those with a military service connection." Is there some other source that I am missing?
Very interesting - thank you for mentioning.Look at the Non-Congressional Table.
The SAs can choose other fully qualified candidates off a MOC slate and charge them to other sources, after one nominee’s appointment gets charged to the MOC. A candidate without a nom from any source they applied to, can still get a nom, if the SA decides to use one of its discretionary “at-large” type noms. I have no idea how, if and when those are used.
I received my nomination around mid-November and took about a couple weeks for my MOC to submit the nominations. It showed up on my USNA portal but it took USAFA another 2-ish weeks to show up in my portal. I had emailed my admissions counselors before the update and they said that the nomination was in their system. From my experience, it seems USAFA is just a bit slower on portal updates but if you know you have your nom, you don't have to worry about whether or not it's in you portal. In everyone's experience, how long does it usually take for the nominations to post to the USAFA portal?
DS is teamblue too. USAFA used to be his #1 and it has slipped down the list. I don't want to put down any academy admissions team, but I will say that West Point admissions is stellar. Attending SLE won him over. Also a shout out to the WP alumni group that has invited him to many events including an Army Navy game watch party. I have a feeling that West Point has the upper hand in candidate outreach. We have encouraged him to focus on his career after a SA. All applications and noms are in, so we will see where and if he lands at one.DS contacted team blue and informed them that our Senator nominated him on 12/11. The nomination showed up in his other SA portals. It’s not showing in USAFA. The senators representative has confirmed that he has turned the mom into USAFA. He received a very rude, curt email response in which it was clear they had not even read his email. He came in my room thoroughly disgusted because this has been a pattern—they always brush him off and once he emails back and says “Sir perhaps I didn’t ask my question well…..” he gets a better response.
All this to say—these interactions have strongly impacted his decision to make Navy his #1. This is a flip from a few months ago. USAFA needs to tighten up.
DD, current C4C at USAFA, experienced the same lags in portal updates--plus additional wait times with receiving a medical waiver. At the time, it may have made the process a bit more stressful. It definitely tried her patience-and her parents' . But looking back, it absolutely helped prepare her mentally for the "hurry up and wait" military lifestyle she was walking into. She arrived at BCT with a jump-start in understanding how important it was to "trust the process," heed timelines that were not her own, and focus on what she had control over. She's home over holiday break and we can see the impact already. Every SA is different and the application process is grueling---likely intentionally so. It’s not the lag time.
