Mr. Mullen, my son Connor received and accepted a 4-year USMC Option NROTC scholarship. He was scheduled to attend NSI later this month at NS Great Lakes, but just received a DoDMERB review letter disqualifying him "due to eosinophilic esophagitis" as well as an accompanying letter from Chief, BUMED stating "a waiver of the physical standards is not recommended."

Request personal point to point contact to give full medical details and request next steps (if any), but he is asymptomatic (0 eosinophils on endoscopic biopsies for over a year) after successful elimination diet with no steroidal treatments (culprit was milk).

Thank you in advance!

Semper Fidelis,

Phil

Connor, the applicant, may email me.

APPLICANT: If you’d like, you may send me an email: lawrence.e.mullen.civ@mail.mil; provide complete name and last 4 SSN; provide the text of your Parent's posting above to YOUR email. The subject line of the email should be “pkkmc96- SAF =Mr. Mullen Request: N92 ltr medically disqualifying (4-Year USMC NROTC scholarship).“ Do NOT embed links in your email as I will not be able to view those. :wiggle:

Thanks Mr. Mullen...will pass this on to him. I really appreciate your empathy and action.

Semper Fidelis,

Phil

Hello,

I was just awarded the NROTC scholarship and I fear I will suffer the same fate because of EoE. Similar to OP's DS, I am completely asymptomatic after eliminating the culprit of my own symptoms, pinto beans. I guess I'm really just curious, were you able to get the waiver? If so, I might want to request a similar contact from Mr. Mullen to see what my next steps will be.

OP hasn’t been back since July, and Mr Mullen is not currently available on the forums. You most likely won’t receive a response, here, to your specific questions to these posters.

I will say for anyone who has an initial DODMERB DQ for various medical conditions who has been selected for NROTC 4 year scholarship, that person will automatically be reviewed for a possible waiver by BUMED. This doesn't mean it will be waived, but the process proceeds without a need for the applicant to request a waiver. It is best to reach out to your unit and ask to speak with the HRA.

Thank you for the help Captain. I actually am trying to join your unit, as I've been admitted to Georgetown and may use my scholarship there. I'll reach out to some contacts for clarity.

I would suggest beginning the process to obtain for yourself any medical records related to treatment of the condition. It can sometimes take weeks for medical records to be sent to you, that way you will have them if and when they request anything. The records are sent to you and then you submit them to DodMerb. It will require you (as long as your are at least 18) to sign all the releases. We are going through this process with my son for a different DQ and I wish he would have gotten started on records collection prior to now. Worst case you'll only be out a few dollars and your time to be well prepared should they ask. Best Wishes!
