Mullen defends Navy relevance in new century

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen defended the process of creating a new national maritime strategy in a speech here at the Naval War College, saying the year of “conversations with the country” was the best method to figure out the way ahead for the Navy in the 21st century.

Mullen would not reveal much detail about the strategy, to be unveiled this fall, but he acknowledged there is a draft in the works that contains three imperatives:
  • Building cooperative relationships among U.S. agencies.
  • Figuring out nuclear deterrence in the post-Cold War era.
  • And learning to see American strategies from “other people’s eyes....

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen has been nominated to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
