I've heard/read that Plebes cannot enjoy music via electronic devices during their plebe year. I also know that some of these things depend on each company. (Of course they will have the opportunity to hear music from the many wonderful Midshipman musical organizations as well as the Electric Brigade and other bands, correct?) What we are wondering is if plebes can have musical instruments, such as acoustic guitar or mini synth/keyboard, in their rooms during the academic year. It would be my guess that this would be a NO but promised my husband I'd ask.

If I am incorrect about the electronics/music, please correct, and feel free to elaborate on this issue.

I would say that unless they are in the Drum and Bugle Corps, Plebes will not be able to have musical instruments in their rooms. I believe I'm safe in saying that this applies across the Brigade.

After all, if a Plebe has time to practice guitar, then he obviously hasn't been given enough academic or professional studies to complete! :thumb:

Regarding music in general, it's not high on the average Plebe's list, and I for one got used to the absence of it very quickly. That said, uperclassmen play their stereos quite a bit, and some (like my roomie and I) will not only blast it, but actually take requests from Plebes they like.

Later during my Plebe Year, when my neighbors (who were Youngsters) were playing something we liked, we would call out "LOUDER!" and they'd turn it up for us. :yllol:

Notice I said LATER during my Plebe Year. :thumb:

Plebes can have anything they want music-wise at their Sponsor's house (provided the Sponsor is OK wth it, of course), and can enjoy it during their time there. We all did!

Back in the day, we could. Besides, if John Phillips hadn't had a guitar and gone back to his room and wrote a song after walking around the Yard one winter Sunday afternoon during his Plebe year, we maybe would never have had The Mamas and the Papas

Thanks, Zaph. I don't know what DS will do without music, but I'm sure he will be too busy to worry about it much. Playing guitar or keyboard is his favorite way to relax. Great idea to check with his sponsor family about keeping an instrument at their house. And, thanks for the insight into a small part of plebe/upperclassman relationships!

Good point, Mongo! I hope it will be allowed for the sake of those who love to play but will trust that the Navy knows what is best for the plebes.

You say that like it would have been a bad thing. :thumb:

What class are you, Mongo?

A couple of my classmates had instruments this past year; however, it probably depends on the company and they could only play on weekends.

Well, that's more current information than mine, so I'd go with the "it varies from company to company" answer.

I knew a few plebes that had guitars and I don't ever remember anyone getting upset except when they were playing it loud at 2 am.

Man, we had to be IN THE RACK at Taps which, IIRC, was 2300. You needed chit to stay up later than that (and normally they only allowed until 2400), and you got into all sorts of trouble if you were up after taps doing anything other than going to the head.

Plebes playing music at 2AM in Bancroft Hall. Man, I'm getting old. :frown:

Don't worry, thats how it still was last year in every company I've heard of. 2AM may have been a weekend, but even then the firsties would have been on us if we were up past midnight.

They CAN have musical instruments. For the most part plebes stay up as late as they want on the weekends and in my company I recall a few hallway jam sessions... couldn't help but let them when some of them could legitimately play AND sing stairway to heaven. One time we were waxing our rooms and everyone was stuck in the hallway. Granted 5 has been getting more lax... but I foresee it tightening back up.

My son will be glad to know that he can have his guitar with him. I think we'll send the vocoder to his sponser family's home if they are okay with that. Thank you, Everyone, for your help!
