I completely agree.I would rather stick my fingers into a wall socket. These boys deserve better.
Heed the request of the OP and Mods' admonishment.

There should be respect for the office, earned or unearned.

Hey, don't worry- I have ALREADY been hand-slapped over this in private messages, no need to beat a dead horse.I completely agree.I would rather stick my fingers into a wall socket. These boys deserve better.

I agree and am all for inclusiveness. Most of my high students don’t look or speak like me. At what point though is it OK to be gay or a minority or the first woman, etc. and not have to be congratulated extra? I believe it is a hit on one’s accomplishments to add their intersectionality when recognizing them. It sometimes makes it seem like he/she needed help getting there. “Well you know, he’s a smart fella but he only got in due to (fill in the blank).” Maybe I’m overreacting because I know EJ but I also know how hard he worked to not only get into West Point but to be class president and first captain. He for sure got there regardless of his color or other special categories. Why mention it at all? EJ didn’t need his sexual orientation added to his list of accomplishments.
In a way I can kind of see why he did it (gaffe or not) in my opinion, it is to show inclusion and acceptance for ALL people, not just the "typical" members of the Armed Forces we think of.
